ALPINE RAILROAD IN NJ-EVOLUTION IN PICS PART VII

When I last posted I had just completed adding rocks to the newest section of my layout. I flew to CA for vacation on 12/27 and am still here now in LA on business until Feb. Of course that means I don't get to work on the layout but before I left I took a few more photos to share after I had colored all the remaining white plaster with Woodland Scenics earth pigment. It really makes a huge difference. Even without grass or trees the layout starts to look more realistic.

Galloping Goose Documentary

Colorado Experience has a nice half hour documentary on the RGS Galloping Geese. Check it out, I learned a lot of new things and I've been living in Colorado for almost a decade!

1939 Railway Maintenance Cyclopedia Excerpt: Standard Lengths of Rails

A couple of weeks, I posted a topic on Railway Engineering and Maintenance Cyclopedias (http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/32050). I really enjoy the once-contemporary detail contained in these and decided others might as well, so I've transcribed a couple of paragraphs from the chapter on rail.

Ward Kimball's Grizzly Flats Railroad

Years ago when they would run the steam engines at Ward Kimball's home (of Disney fame), a friend of mine would call me and give me the heads up. I would run over there and spend a few hours riding back and forth on the short track next to his house.

A few times there would be celebrities that you would not recognize with out their makeup. But I did sit next to Sally Fields and Susan Sarandon one time.

MOW car colors in the 30s and 40s?

Does anyone know the most common color(s) generally for MOW cars before VE day?

I model a narrow gauge line in WW2 and want to use a spare tender as a MOW water car. I know the D&RGW used grey as a common MOW color, but what did the other RRs use?

I know yellow or orange was common in later years, but what about in the 30s and 40s?

Most Overrated and Underrated Railroads to Model

Is there a railroad that you think is overrated or underrated? Modeled too often or not enough? I'd be interested in thoughts on this. My opinion:

Overrated: Union Pacific (Particularly the Transition Era)

It has boring scenery and topography along the mainline, boring paint schemes, and it swallowed up numerous smaller and more interesting railroads. There seems to be a ton of modelers out there and the only thing 90% of them model is Sherman Hill. End of rant.

Overrated Runner Up: Denver and Rio Grande Western (Narrow Gauge)

Disneyland Rail

So, a few months ago, in a Photo Fun thread, we were talking about the Disneyland Railroad, and it's history...

Well, Toy Man Television just made this wonderful little piece all about the Disneyland Railroad, with a lot of history, photos, video... it's a wonderful little documentary short.

Digging up some old videos

I was going through some of my old YouTube videos today and remembered this one from 2009. Also one of the favorite videos I ever shot.

The CSX Callahan sub between Callahan Fl and Baldwin Fl. Turn the sound up.

ALPINE RAILROAD IN NJ-EVOLUTION IN PICS PART VI

Since my last post I had glued hydrocal rock castings to the mountains on the newer section and colored them after having glued the tunnel portals and retaining walls in place. The next set of photos shows the progress.

This is the newest section I mentioned in a previous post with the mountains and portals in place.
