Modeling general discussion
Army Men Around the House
I originally got into this hobby thinking I'd start building dioramas, but as it happened, my main focus when I first started was figures. I had a bunch of ideas for dioramas, but never built them, and instead painted figures, and later vehicles that suited my interests. I gradually veered into gearing my model building around my photography hobby and taking photos of my models engaged in different activities. I've been doing this for a while now and I've really enjoyed combining the two hobbies.
Different Athearn Trucks
I just purchased an Athearn F-7A powered unit off of Ebay. The trucks on this locomotive are different than the typical Athearn Trucks I have seen and am wondering if someone can tell me when the switch from what I have seen changed to these newer design?
What I'm used too: All the Athearn loco trucks I have seen have square bronze bearings that are a part of the axle assembly. These bearings fit into the steel frames of the trucks and are what transfers the power to the motor.
On30 code 100 rail.
I have an HO layout that used Code 100 rail. In a new layout that I am considering, I would salvage as much code 100 rail from my current layout as I can to use in the On30 layout.
Is there a source for HO etched ladders?
I'm working on a freight car project and need a source for HO photo etched ladders. Anybody have any thoughts on this?
Snake Bitten
I wanted to relate a short story that had be thinking this morning as I drank my go-go juice..
Saturday I reveived a call asking if I would drive one of our church members to go pick up something he had purchased. He is 77 years old and his eyesight isn't all that great and it was a pretty long drive for him. He is also an retired engineer doing the best that he and his wife can do. I said yes of course and we made plans for mid Sunday after church.
What's on your workbench - June 2020
A new month with new projects. Let's see what you have!
My latest: A Westerfield ATSF Bx-13 boxcar with some additional wood weathering to go. With the virus and social plans on hold for the summer, it's a great time to build out all of your kits collecting dust!

Weekly Photo Fun - May 31 - Jun 6, 2020
It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.
The infamous KATO turnout.
Anyone familiar with the “how to” guy, Fifer?
Anyone try his wiring KATO turnouts?
He sells it as “full proof”. I’m going to try it. I’m struggling with the KATO turnouts.
Track code and reliability
Hi all, first, I've already done a search and read many of the threads related to this topic and I didn't see anything that I felt really addressed this in an engineering way.
Assume the following.
Compressor Selection
Good morning.
Not having done any airbrushing since the last century when Floquil held sway, I will again soon enter into the painting fray, including a new brush for acrylics and compressor, as well.
Believe I have the new brush selection finalized but am undecided as to the compressor, other than I do wish for as quiet of a compressor as is reasonably (thinking $$) available and with a tank or tanks to minimize constant compressor use and noise.
