Laser printer with white toner ??

I make a lot of custom decals for covered hopper cars and I need access to white lettering. I have used several custom decal vendors but I have found that they are very expensive and difficult to work with.

I see that Micromark is selling a HP laser printer that can take a white toner cartridge. Has anyone used one of these? How opaque is the white toner?

Can you put a white layer down with yellow on top of it in order to make the yellow more opaque?

If you are making an item with white and another color, which is printed first?

When do you devote time to the hobby?

So when do you devote time to the hobby?  All year or just some of the time?  Do you fill your weekends or just a few hours here and there?  Can you just pick up and go or do you need to plan ahead with family or take time off from work?

And thinking about use of your time, how much time do you spend on the hobby vs how much you WANT to spend?  How much of your 'free' time is devoted to model railroading vs other hobbies?

How to contact Joe Fugate?

I have sent several emails using the Contact Us link with no response. I know you guys are busy and obviously short staffed but I am trying to get in touch with Joe Fugate.

RIP, Jack Ozanich

My apologies if this has already been posted and I just missed it. I just happened to read on the Trainorders forum that Jack Ozanich passed away last Friday, May 29 from complications related to pneumonia and lung cancer. His HO scale Atlantic Great Eastern and 3 3/4” scale Sandy Ridge & Clear Lake live steam railroad were both inspirations for many a railroad modeler. His absence will surely be felt in the model railroading community.

Locomotive stopped moving - hasn't moved since.

I own the BLI GE ES44AC locomotive, dcc with Paragon3 sound.

I was running it today when I notice there was a stutter/stall on a curve. I had to nudge the loco to make contact again.

WIFI, Cell phone throttles, from a Troglodyte's Point of View

I am a confused troglodyte (can you guess?)  I don't understand the attraction of using a cell phone to operate your layout.  As we speak, I am sitting in front of my "Obsolete Desk Top Confuser"; so, the fact that I don't get it, should be easy enough to understand.  I don't like talking on the telephone much and certainly don't want to be accessible to every Tom, Dick and Harry who has my phone number 24/7/365!  I am done with day to day attempts at trying to make a living and so much of what people feel is simply

EZ couplers?

There’s those magnetic couplers that are pretty consistent. I think they’re called EZ magnetic couplers.

i want to change all the couplers on my rolling stock and locomotives to those couplers.

Exactly what am I looking to order? EZ magnet couplers? One size fits all? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Portable AC for the layout room

On the Where is your Layout Located thread https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/38481 I posted mine was in the garage and I had just got a small portable AC for the layout room. There were a couple of follow posts so rather than highjack the thread I thought I'd start a separate thread for it. It's that time of the year and many of us have garage layouts. So share how you cool off your layout room or for those looking for ideas, scan the posts to see what may work for you.

Model Railroading between the Transition Era and the Staggers Act - who's buying all those second Gen units?

In the discussion of the ProtoSteam throttle project, while discussing how large a market there might be for such a controller, AlexW made the following comment:

"Most of the activity that I see in terms of people building layouts and on Facebook, YouTube and the like is post- Staggers act. There seems to be a gap in-between the Transition era and the Staggers Act that few like to model, and then it really picks up again."
