Modeling general discussion

One less LHS in Maryland

M.B. Klein is closing its doors as a walk-in hobby shop, and going full on-line shopping only as of November 1st.

The writing has been on the (shrinking) walls, but didn't expect it this soon.

The ultimate test of our 22" radius helix

I'm back - and this time I brought plenty of locomotives and rolling stock to test our World's Lightest Helix!

Some may remember my original post back a few months ago. That post generated a lot discussion and ....well naysayers, negativity and even some arguments. The point is, not everyone has the space for a helix with generous curves so there is hope.

Like it, hate it, watch it or don't watch it - it is what it is and it works!

Enjoy, Joey Ricard

Lift rings (HO) Eye bolts

I saw this somewhere recently and have lost the reference.

I'm trying to upgrade details on Walthers Proto / LifeLike P2k Geep locomotives and am looking for scale lifting eyes, the rings that are attached to topside panels.

Any suggestions are welcome; what I'm specifically looking for is a manufacturer who offers them in three different sizes.

"modeling" fog

In another thread, jTrackin asked how to make fog short of breaking your phone's camera lens.  Here's a brief description of how I transformed a photo using post processing.  Others can comment on in-camera effects.

First here is the before (with a hastily photoshopped sky) and the after.

Randy Lee Decker's Great Divide Lines John Allen tribute

Randy Lee Decker has embarked on modeling a 95% accurate replica of John Allen's third layout. Randy's background is in museum display work and he's approaching this project as another of his museum projects.

That means this layout is a serious "replica" of John Allen's famous layout, almost board for board, stick for stick -- but not quite. Randy will be using more modern technology in his replica -- like high fidelity flex track, Kadee couplers, and DCC. Plus he's making a few "improvements" or "corrections" to John's design -- but only a few. Randy can talk about those.

Trench Railways and WW1

I was talking with someone from my Friday night train group and he commented that he had just ordered one of the new On30 Military engines used in the so called trench railways in WW1 in France (and elsewhere). And was thinking of building a module for it.

Of Golden Spikes

Michael Rose just completed his mainline, which is wonderful and worth celebrating. People naturally talked about 'a golden spike'. Now I'm aware where this comes from historically, but since so few people hand-spike track it really seems to me like we should be talking instead about a golden rail joiner.
