Modeling general discussion

Drop End Gondolas

I recently came into over 24 of these cars. What would be some good loads to model for them. Does anyone run them and have photos to share of them loaded?

Blast from the past (Old Scenery book)

Just got this in the mail yesterday. I've literally worn out several copies since I got my first one at around the age of 10. I know most everything in it, cover to cover, from memory but I saw it on e-bay and decided I wanted it as a keepsake. This one is in really good condition. Some folks consider the information dated but it's still a very valuable resource. When I showed my 17 year old daughter the center spread of the G&D, she said "That looks like your railroad Dad." I don't think I could get a better compliment!

Any reports from the National Narrow Gauge Convention?

Just wanted to see if anyone could give any reports or new product announcements from the National Narrow Gauge Convention.  I think that it is starting up tomorrow and going through the 7th.

Thanks,

Identifying the year of Athearn and other HO scale trucks (autos, not railcar)

I'm having difficulty researching the specific year of these trucks made by Athearn.

This white one, I can't find any prototypes with this type of grill:

This blue one I think is a 1970 model:

And this one I have no idea:

Chicken Cars

A long time ago, probably back in the 90's, I stumbled on a site "dedicated to chicken cars and the men that rode them". It was a hilarious write up glorifying in a tongue-in-cheek way the fortitude of those who could stand to ride with the chickens (and emerge covered with feathers and chicken crap).

Somehow the memory of that probably long-gone website popped back into my head the other day. I wish I could find that again, but on the other hand it probably wasn't quite as funny as I remember.

Layout with no visible industries

Hello I'm in the process of building a new layout.I have a very limited budget where it comes to deciding between train items, track items, scenery etc.So I would like to focus on rolling stock and locomotives of the D&H during the 1977-85 period and rolling stock seen on DH trains of that time. But I also want an simple but interesting layout to display and run the stuff on. So
