Cost of a train
Just read through http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/30850#comment-form blog and did not want to high jack the thread so though I would pose this question. How much do you spend on building a train?
What can cause a surging locomotive
I have an Athearn HO scale Big-Boy with a QSI Titan-U decoder. Everything runs well except sometimes the locomotive surges. A fast-slow-fast cycle that lasts about 1-1.5 seconds. It is most noticeable when pulling a long train and the caboose oscilates back and forth. I think the coupler slack seems to accentuate the speed change.
Some in the club think it is a mechanical problem. I checked the side rods and none of them seem to be binding.
I think it might be a decoder setting, maybe a BEMF setting.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Overlad 100t.oil-electric brass loco-What sound decoder?
I'am an Italian fan of North American Railways.
My question is.
What type of sound decoder is correct for mount in an Overland GE 100t oil-electric locomotive?
The prime mover of this laco was an IR 600 Hp 12 cil. (according with "The Second Diesel Spotter's Guide" by Jerry A. Pinkepank).

dockside
sure there's a need for new dockside loco with all bells and whistles but who's going to spend $4,000 for it? The price of the hobby has just gotten --------------------.
Flying Scotsman slips, Garratts rule, and double Fairlies to Blaenau Ffestiniog
When you're in the U.K., there are always too many trains and too little time. I can't post what's on my phone, but I can link to some YouTube videos that illustrate what I'm seeing.
NYC baggage car
Does any one know what the ends doors were used for? As near as I can tell, there were 100 cars in the series, all with end doors. Road # 9100-9199
Thanks in advance

IAIS 3rd Subdivision
Looking forward to updates on the IAIS 3rd. Sub as recreated by Colin. Knew him, Clark, Steve and others from membership in the Hawkeye Model Railroad Club in Iowa City. Their techniques and skills are simply fantastic. One question though. Unless they are not indicated on the plan, are there staging areas representing westbound Des Moines / Council Bluffs and eastbound Rock Island / Moline / Chicago? Just curious. Great plan can't wait to see it executed.

Access options on a very deep urban scene.
Hi all,
I am working on a concept layout that involves a very deep urban scene at some point and i would very much appreciate some input based on similar experiences in dealing with accessibility to parts of such scenes. Main Text and plans on the next post.
Many thanks in advance for your replies!

3 point bearing on trucks
Hi,
My name is Michael and I live in Germany.
There is a company that does thin etched brass shims, which go between the bolsters and the trucks of a car. These shims have ridges to effect a 3 point bearing. Orientated lengthwise or crosswise to the car, they allow the trucks to swivel in the respective direction.
I forgot the name of this company. Can anybody help, please?
Regards
Michael
Pembroke: Flat Cars
I have been thinking that I need a side project while completing the heavy shop. Most nights, I'm not able to make progress on the woodworking as it's too late to run the table saw. Casting about for a little diversion, I thought about making some flat cars.
