Proto 2000 FA-1 vs FA-2

Hello

When Proto 2000 did their Alco FA-1 and FA-2 models a number of years ago, did they use the same tooling for both the FA-1 and FA-2 or was it actually different? If yes, was the FA-1 or the FA-2 used for the base tooling?

Decoder programmer and tester

Got tired of trying to program and test decoders on the layout so decided to put the laser to work and make a dedicated place with all the right equipment on hand

Started with a new Digitrax PR 3 plus  Power Pax and ESU decoder tester which have been in a drawer for years as it was a pain to get them out and use them on the layout

Here is the result of an afternoons work and hopefully a much easier route to programming and testing prior to installation of decoders

Cab, weight/frame for a potential TP56 kitbash project.

I have been out of model railroading for a long time [ten years], but playing with SCARM and some track plan books has kind of given me the itch again, that and visiting the local rr club's open house night.

And I find that the TP56 exists and it really tickles my love for esoteric motive power. That and it seems a literal halfway point between a road switcher and a shunter/shifter, supposedly weighing 80-100 tons.

Where has this guy been all my modeling life?

I'm talking about Luke Towan, owner of Boulder Creek Railroad and one amazing modeler. I stumbled upon his You Tube videos over the weekend and spent nearly all of sunday afternoon watching each and every one of them. going, "damn, this guy is good!"

If you have never seen his videos I urge you to go to YouTube and do a search for him. You will not be disappointed.

Late Summer Progress on Cascade Sub: Fascia and Digitrax

The past week offered opportunity to get back into the basement after almost 7 months away from the railroad and continue to make progress in any way possible. After a successful winter work session, the project list was still long with a few major projects remaining before more intricate and detailed work can begin. Some time was spent on each major goal, and the coming week will provide more opportunity for work.

Roads and parking lots.

A couple recent posts have started me thinking and rethinking roads and parking lots. Craig BNML2 and Nscaler 88 have brought two different approaches to the table recently.

My version of servo controlled turnouts

Been thinking about this for awhile and took the plunge last week.

I needed a switch / control mechanism that I could mount in foam and be able to remove easily if needed.  I didn't want something I would have to destroy scenery to work on it.

Here is a link to a youtube video that shows the operation of the first one I did.  Have done 3 more and so far they all work fine.

NMRA convention 2017 Orlando FL

This convention in my opinion was a total waste of time and money, I'll tell you why in later posts.
