Thoughts on "craftsman kits"

Craftsman quality structure kits have been on my mind a lot lately, both because I have just completed my first build of one and because I am helping a friend dispose of a lifelong collection. This has led to a lot of research as I track down original product numbers and prices, and try to get an idea when various items were produced. That in turn has given me an overview of a part of the hobby I had never paid much attention to.

Drawbridges

I may be in need of a drawbridge for my new layout design.

i know of, and have one of the nice Walther's ones, but it is too long / large for my space

i remember seeing lots of 'cheapies' when i first got started back in the hobby. I think there were various makers,
Tyco, AHM, Pola, etc      ...and some of these were not not that bad, particularly if 'doctored up'

I went looking for images of these various ones, and particularly some DIMENSIONS for them. I'm having trouble finding the info,...HELP

Any experience with smoke units making track dirty?

Anyone on here have experience running smoke units on their layout? Does the track get dirty faster? I would think yes, but it would be nice to find someone with actual experience to confirm this suspicion.

Of Ballast and Soot...

Okay, so... I'm very happy with my ballast... well... on the sides of the roadbed. True, due to the level of the layout, you can only see the middle of the road by standing on a stool, and well... I stand on a stool a lot.

Heavy Graffiti

Graffiti, as we all know, has been around a long time (even ancient Roman ruins had it) ad even here in America, we have had graffiti that dates back well over 170 years... modern graffiti (with the spray cans) seems to date back to the first spray cans (1927... or 1949, depending on what source) however, it wouldn't be until about the 1980s that it became a real problem on the railroads.

My curiosity is... why?

Hybrid Car Card/Waybill & Computerized Car Forwarding

Those of you interested in computer-assisted car forwarding systems may have read some of the posts that I've submitted during the summer about the Shipper-driven Traffic Simulator, a free, web-based, multi-user system that generates freight traffic and can also track cars, print waybills, switchlists, etc...

Loksound Steam & Chuff Cams

Hi everyone,

Has anyone tried the Loksound decoders with steam? It seems they have a limited variety of US sounds right now but they are getting better. I have 2 of their decoders so far for diesels and like the ability to change the sounds in the future. Does Tsunami or TCS Wow provide better sound for steam? I am open to recommendations.

Ideas for 12' x 24' TuffShed® build (N-scale): What would you do?

I'm thinking of buying a 12' x 24' TuffShed to house a brand new N-scale layout. Would like to hear from those who've built in similar spaces. The TuffShed uses normal 2" x 4" lumber for wall-studs, and overall, its components are similar to traditional house-building materials (more info here).
