Layout Sound for DC only no on-board sound cards
Building my first HO layout (4x8 table top, 2 mainlines). Some of my equipment is pre 1950 Steam loco built by my Dad. No way I am taking those apart to try to add sound cards. My newer stuff none is DCC ready, hence my 7 block DC layout w/ 2 CABs.
Kato SD40 numberboards
I have a Kato SD40, new in box, that has been hiding in the closet since 2003. It is an undecorated model and, unfortunately, came without numberboard inserts. Kato USA does not have any in stock. Any ideas would be appreciated.

How to stop structures from glowing when lighted?
I have the Walther's Machine Shop underway, about ready to assemble the sides onto the base. I plan to LED light it along with most everything else I build in the future for the layout.
The problem I'm going to have to deal with is the glow through the styrene that occurs with lighted structures. A building that glows in the dark seems a bit unrelistic and counter productive.
I'm Disappointed
The decision to lock a recent blog due to "... getting a LOT of complaint emails about this thread" is very disappointing. I noticed that there were no complaints IN the blog that had very well thought and apparently accurate information that could be of use to many of us. If it had gone off track into areas that are inappropriate or hurtful, then it could have been controlled and, if necessary, shut down.
But once again ,the need of the few outweigh the good of the many.

I have a little different problem, but related. I am covering the insulated walls and ceiling in my 12x16 train shed with 4x8 sheets of 1/8" masonite stapled to the 2x4 studs of the shed.
Decoders for a Newb
So I am going from DC to DCC. I am looking for clarification:
- $30 decoders dont do sound?
- you can buy speakers and add to the above decoder to get sound?
- You have to buy a $100 decoder that has a speaker attached?
A little about my HO scale locos:
- Bowser DCC Ready GE U25B
- Proto 200 DC Alco S9
I plan on buying the Digitrax Zephyr with LNWI to use my smartphone as a throllte if that helps answer the questions
