Railserve Layout Update Video New Extension

Hello Everyone,

As I was browsing through the recent Weekly Photo thread I saw @Steve kleszyk compliment my recent Video (Thank You Steve). It hit me that I haven't posted here on MRH in some time so here it is.

Adding Interest to the Card Card and Waybill System

Most layouts that I have visited and operated on that used the Card Card and Waybill system operated very well and reasonably efficient. I chose this system based on the ease of use and not having to hand write or computer-generate switch lists for each train in real time.

Measure motor RPM with a smartphone

I wanted to know the operating characteristics of the old open-frame Pittman motors in my brass engines so I could replace them with can motors.  I wasted several months ordering and testing various motors that were too slow. A multimeter could measure voltage and current draw. But how to determine the RPMs?

Fortunately, other people know how to measure RPM, amperage, and torque, and posted it all on YouTube.

Static grass ground probe for plaster scenery base

I posted this question as a reply to several older topics on static grass, but it occurred to me they might never even be seen by anyone for awhile.  My question is on how to establish a good ground contact for the application of static grass when one has hard shell or some other plaster scenery base.  All the videos I have seen apparently have a foam board base or some other soft material that one can easily inert a nail into as the ground contact.  Can't very well pound a nail into a plaster scenery base without cracking the plaster or at least making a mess of plaster

Dremel 7300 Woes

Folks,

Paint wash. How thick or thin?

This sounds like a dumb question, but what's the proper ratio of water to paint to make a nice wash that does what its supposed to without covering what's underneath. I have tried a few washes but just seems like I have too much water. Help!

plug in decoder problem

Hello, I have been installing decoders for customers here in Illinois for more than 10 years, but I recently came upon a bad issue.
Customer had Proto 1000 Subway car with an 8 pin DCC plug on the lighting board. I removed the factory jumper plug and installed an NCE 8 pin plug in decoder (N14SRP). Had this decoder on hand and was new.
Programmed on program track, using Decoder Pro, put on main line and in about 10 seconds 1 of the diodes for the bridge rectifier burned up big time.

Finished my very first model railroad project (almost 40yrs later)

It's not that I've never finished anything before but this was the very first model railroad thing I bought.  I was 11 and had recently discovered model railroading by reading encyclopedias after school.  In the QR volume was a section on railroads and then one on model railroading, a hobby I didn't know existed.  We had just moved to a town with a hobby shop and I had also just read a book about building the transcontinental railroad.  I mentioned to the shop owner I thought it was a fascinating story.

DCC decoder controlled coupler

This probably has been covered before ...

but, anyway, these are pager motors, affixed to a Kadee HO coupler by CA, and operated by a small string to the base of the air line on the coupler ..

You need an extra available function output to make these work, or two if you want both front and rear.. They draw UNDER one hundred milliamp, and as such are driven from the function output directly, no other electronics needed.

The pager motors are available on ebay, and can come from several different vendors ..
