Hazmat Rules
In one of the other magazines this month there is a picture of a Explosives placard from the NYS&W RR. The placard dates from the 1943-1953 era since it shows Henry K. Norton as the trustee.
Very different rules than the modern ones, but interestingly, many of the concerns addressed are still in the modern rules. The requirement to keep the car "... near the middle of the train..." stayed in the placement rules up until about 1980.

How to connect electrical wires between modules
Hello
I am planning a new modular layout, and wants to hear what system you use to connect the needed electrical contacts other than tracks from one module to the next.
Each module is a framed layout top, just like a drawer turned upside-down.
It does not matter here, but this is HO scale.

Ballast
Choosing a "category" is difficult. So I chose two. Ballast. First of all. I'm still going to play trains until I'm totally satisfied that the track, locos, cars, wiring is all perfect. And then think about ballast. I am paranoid about water. Not so much the Elmers/water used to fixate the ballast. But if it's needed to be taken up. My track and roadbed are all laid with caulk. You know - the thin layer, just enough to hold. In 6 months, I've had no trouble with that. In fact, when I did need to pry up and relay, it was super easy. No mess. No fuss.

Switching the Ready-Mixed Plant on the Stockyard Industrial Lead
I created a video that displays a very basic operation on my small switching HO Scale layout, serving one of my busiest customers. Usually, the local job switches all customers on the Stockyard Lead industrial spur in one session or day shift for the crew. However, sometimes my shortline will work only one customer if there is enough work involved. In this example, a transfer has brought in some cars for the Ready-Mixed plant and the customer would like to receive them quickly to keep up production for a big job.

POVA on the Cover of a Magazine
A friend in the hobby pointed me to the February issue of Railfan & Railroad where the POVA is featured on the cover of the magazine! The article itself is very cool and very informative. I learned a lot I did not know about the railroad's history. I also finally got a good, clear sense of day-to-day operations on the modern POVA railroad.

The Mud Bay & Western #5 - Fastening Down the Upper Deck
The previous post saw us roughing in the skyboards and backdrop support. This had to be done before the benchwork was fastened down because in some areas the benchwork (door slabs) are what hold the lower edge of the skyboard to the wall. Now that the skyboards are in, we can begin fastening down the door slabs.

Black Train Room Ceiling?
While looking online at Home Depot, I discovered that black 2' x 2' ceiling tiles and suspension grid components are available. Would this look better in my model railroad room than white?

Road name paint dilemma
Hello every one. I'm in the process of converting some of my old Kato engines (GP38-2s) from DC to DCC. When I was a nube I was buying everything ( all different roads simply because I liked them). Now that I have calmed down (some :) ), I've settled on three roads, Norfolk Southern, CSX and Conrail. Instead of buying new locos, I would like to repaint the roads i don't want. Which brings me to my questions. Doe's anyone know the name of the colors for CSX both old and new schemes and what brand of paint is best and comes closest to it?
Model railroad displays on display at...(worldwide)
Hi all,
A large number of modellers have probably heard of Hamburg's "Miniatur Wonderland", "The Franklin and South Manchester", or The San Diego MRC's displays at Balboa Park in San Diego, where model railroads are on display to the public. Some of these public facing layouts have almost achieved a legendary status as a "must see if in town". These are perhaps some of the better known ones.
