Powering Kato Turnouts

Hello All

I have recently purchased a kit of HO Kato Unitrack (Black River Junction) and a NCE Power Cab to start my first layout.

I would appreciate some advice on how best to power the turnouts.  I am considering purchasing NCE Switch-Kat accessory decoders but I will need at least 11 of them as one is needed for each turnout (except for the crossover where I can use one decoder for 2 switches) and the cost is rather high.

Any suggestions that would be more economical?

Thanks

Mike

A simplified plan for a modest space

My recent posts dealt with realistic train length and the importance of keeping the space in front of the electrical panel clear.  This post deals with the reality of the space that I have and the constraints that I need to work in.  My last design not only blocked the electrical panel, it also went across the doorway at three different heights.  There were benefits. It was an around the walls design with a 6' x 12' peninsula up the middle.  This gave me approximately 100' of mainline run per deck.

To Signal or not...that is the question

I am in the process of my new layout.  I am done my layout drawing, but the question I am left with, is should I install Signals or not.  I model HO and my layout is a freelance modern (today) concept.  I had though about putting them in and going with the idea that they were used by the railroad before my railway took over, and they just decided not to use them.  the other concept is to have running CTC on the layout or using the signals as ABS.  I am just not sure what route to go.  Any suggestions would be welcome.

Non Abrasive Track Cleaner

Recently somewhere, and I can't remember where, I saw an article about a new erasure type track cleaner that is not as abrasive as the old style Track Brite and others and was wondering if someone else has seen this and knows where one can get some of them, thanks.

US in the UK for a semi seasoned modeller

Hi all,

During the last week I have discovered MRH (with the Ezine & pod casts on the ipod while im modeling). This recent discovery has led me to have a bit of a change of direction.

Converting Rivarossi Berk to DCC

I know; I know; the're old, but I really really want to convert one of my 6 (count 'em) Rivarossi NKP Bershires to DCC with sound. I got most of them for less than $15 at a yard sale a few years ago.

Can anyone walk me through parts and "labor" to convert one of these pole-type motorized engines to DCC? New Berkshires at $400 plus are a bit out of my range and I hate to have to give up these engines for scrap or something.

Just bought a TON of N ga -

Older guy (like me) got burned out and his wife needed the space for her sewing stuff.

I want to make a layout for the top of my pool table (4 x 8).

Of course it must be removable - maybe hinged or sectional. One piece probably a little too unwieldy but I do have room to store it near by.  Also be nice if I could handle it by myself.

Anybody know about anything like that ?

I see the big clubs have sections they connect together.

Thanks,

Bill

Removable layout extension?

I have come up with a plan to extend my layout to include an additional 30 miles of track (actually about 12'), allowing me to model the entire in some fashion.  However, doing so will require that I cross a doorway, hall, and extend into the living room with removable benchwork.  With the extension in place, following a train will require a pair of duck-unders (or staying ducked for about 4') beneath track set at a 50" elevation, and about 4' of hallway reduced to 24" of usable width.  Actual switching could all take place in the open space of the li

Zip Texturing using concrete coloring

Hi Guys,

A quick question about zip texturing.

In Australia I am having a hard time finding the dry/powdered paint in the craft stores. When I do find it, it is usually bright blues, reds, yellows, etc.

I was in the hardware store on Monday, well several hardware stores to be honest and noticed there were concrete coloring powders in similar colors those Joe speaks about in his videos.

Do you think this would work with Plaster of Paris as an alternative for zip texturing colors? Anybody tried it?

Regards,

Nigel
