Trying to be realistic

I'm looking for a little guidance for the length of train to run on my layout.  The era that I am modeling is the mid-50's.  The layout room is 18' x 19', but I think that there will be 30" aisles along two of the walls for access to the electrical panel and to keep from having tracks across the entryway into the room.  My plan is to put together a multi deck layout in this space (more on that in a later post).

Woodland Scenics Layout Kits

so I'm finding it hard to put together a good layout design, and i like the way that the instructions are laid out. has anyone had any experience with the HO Grand Valley? (Or the other kit I can't remember the name of)

what are you meant to put the layout on? do you need to make a frame? or can you buy one?

is it worth doing for an easy way in?

or should i put the money towards a layout that someone else has already made?

thanks in advance!

Prodigy question

DCC Question:  I think it's time for a power booster.  My Prodigy Squared doesn't seem to have enough juice to trip the auto reverse loops when I have more than 4 or 5 locos running.  Looking at the booster options, there is 3.5 and 8amp, but the 3.5 is a "district booster".  I don't really want to create districts.  Is it possible to plug both the base unit and the booster to the main power feeds?  Would I get 7 amp if I combine the 3.5 boo

Ready for Prime Time - Backdrops on the 8th Sub

There's been a lot going on UNDER the layout lately with wiring and such, but there's finally something happening above ground again.  The free-standing backdrop that winds along the layout's main serpentine peninsula started to receive sheathing as of the last blog entry http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/5636.  Installation of the remainder was finished last week, so it was time to prepare everything for paint.

rock train

I have some Walthers 40' Ortner hoppers but I would like to buy a different model because my plan is building a unit rock train. I know Walthers makes Greenville 100T hoppers.

Options please?

new athearn 50' superior dr bx

Athearn 50' Superior box car: just wondering if anyone new if these models are accurate to the time perioed. athearn says that these cars ran from 1970-90's. i looked at the DRGW historical site and they listed those particular numbered box cars as red not yellow.

What to use to make a vid of layout?

Hi all just want to know what you use to get the vids of your layouts.  I looked on E-bay and found some mini recorders in all price range including some that looked like cig lighters LOL.  Just need some advise.

Thanks,

Gary

HO Scale Live Steam?

Well, I should say OO scale live steam. My friend in the area Norman showed me his Hornby live steam OO scale A4 locomotive yesterday, sadly I only had my old iPhone with me.

Caught! CSX Derailment on Bing Bird's Eye...

So I was doing a little virtual railfanning scoping out details for my new layout when I came across this:

This is an image using Bing's "Bird's Eye" functionality fully zoomed in.  If you go to the coordinates
39.897619,-75.151172 you can take a look.  This is in CSX's south Philadelphia yard about 1/2 mile south east of Lincoln Financial Field.
