DC vs. single crossover
My layout wiring will be simple DC not DCC. When using a single crossover turnouts do gaps still need to be cut, or can trains pass by the crossover on each track without problems?

Mt. Coffin & Columbia River (N scale): Year Two
Here's the continuation of my Mt. Coffin & Columbia River 23" x 41" N scale layout that I started back at the end of November, 2010.

GP9 1 to 1 scale cab ride
When I'm not doing model railroading I volunteer as a car host on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Blue Ridge, GA. Last weekend we had a light turnout of guests so I got the wonderful opportunity to take a cab ride in a GP9 - my first ever cab ride. Since I wasn't expecting this treat, all I had was my cell phone to shoot the video. I used a demo version of software to produce the video, thus the loco in the center of the screen. The only thing better the mod

New Kaslo & Slocan layout
Thanks to everyone who responded to my blog post covering our new Kaslo & Slocan (CP) layout. I've attached our updated layout plans reflecting some of the input. The Nakusp location has been moved to reduce operator congestion and the upper level depth has been reduced to allow easier access to the lower level trackage. Thanks again everyone for your input.

I have a Walthers trestle bridge that i am about to instal on my layout. The bents are made of plastic.
any tips on colours/techniques etc to achieve maximum benefit. It will be installed on my coal branchline.
2. Is it better to weather rocks before fixing onto layout or when all in place?

Model Railroad News closes shop
Sadly....
After much thought and discussion I regret to announce that effective immediately, Model Railroad News will no longer be published. It has been a pleasure and an honor serving you these past 16 years and if there was any way to continue on, we would do so without a second thought.
Thank you for welcoming us into your homes and allowing us to be a part of your lives.

Hidden Trackage and Multiple Shelves
Hi folks,
I'm still in the drawing/tinkering phase of layout design and wanted to pose a couple of questions (I'll try hard to explain things clearly).

Anyone in the building trades? Need advice please
I have the last coat of blue paint to put on the backdrops tonight and then I begin installing suspended ceiling grid. I am going to install lay-in panel drop ceiling from valance to valance and lay-in light panels from valance to backdrop. My valance uses 15" radius curves at the corners. Herein lay my conundrum.
How do I make curved corners with the wall bracket rail?
Building bridges on grades?
I wanted to open a discussion about bridges on our model railroads and the grades we put in our track work. I am hoping Joe will jump in here to tell us what he did on his layout. In the prototype do the railroads interrupt their grades for bridges to be built level? I have heard that heavy downgrade breaking on a bridge can cause rail slippage on the prototype bridge and damage it. I do not know if this is true or not.
