Athearn Blue Box GP38-2 truck to frame arcing
I purchased a couple of mixed lots of HO equipment at auction. In this "stuff" there was a GP38-2 dummy and a powered GP50. I wanted the ROCK painted GP38-2. The BN GP50 had no details with it. After some research it appeared I could take the motor and power trucks from the GP50 and put it into the GP38-2.

Caboose Turning?
I am modeling a freelance 1930s steam operation (Cornhill & Atherton).
I still have a lower deck to build, but the upper deck track work is complete so I am taking the opportunity to test working the main yard. This is to iron out any constructional glitches and also see if I have created any operational problems with my track plan. Changing track work before scenery construction is obviously easier.
Anyway – I bring the local into the yard, detach the caboose and spot the cars...............

Pacific Fruit Express adjoining buildings. what else was there?
Great article this month got me thinking about how I want to create my layout. I have an icing house and line and wondered what other buildings were beside it. Sure, the office and maybe a shack, but what else was in the yard next to the icing ramps and line? Car repair shed? What would that look like? I'm going with a southern California theme so it will have to work with that. Anyone have any ideas what to add to make the module look authentic?
Suggestions please.
Thanks.

Inside Engine House Wall Color
I'm wanting to 'paint' the inside of my engine house. I'm using a blue pole barn from Pikestuff. When I leave a unit parked in the door you can't see inside so then the color doesn't matter. However, when the power is out on the line, you can see inside. I plan on covering over the walls with either cardstock or thin styrene, but what color to use?

Freight Car Weighting (HO)
In a post on another topic, Mike Confalone mentioned he weights his HO freight cars heavy... along the lines of 10 ounces or more if I recall correctly. I have always over weighted my cars from the NMRA guidelines, but only an ounce or so more depending on car length.
I think everyone would agree that light cars are troublesome. Ever push a string of empty 34' hopper cars through a yard ladder? But I wonder at what point do most feel enough weight has been added.
MEK Substitute
Tried some, bonds styrene just like MEK
"MEK Substitute" is the name of the product, it replaces Methyl ethyl ketone(MEK), the best bonding agent for sytrene. MEK is being phased out.

There is a serious effort to rebuild a portion of the narrow-gauge Silverton Northern, running north out of Silverton Colorado to Howards Fork. They're looking to raise $10,000, and have about $3800 raised so far.
