Closing
It was announced on Oct. 1 that Polk Hobbies/ Aristocraft will be closing on Dec 31 of this year. Sad news

Finally... A Start!
With house construction and finishing basically done, it's time to get organized... Step one for organizing is to build storage shelves, which are conveniently, part of the benchwork for the railroad!
Built the benchwork shelving for under the St. Jean to South of Morris section of the layout with my youngest son tonight.
Tortoise Switch Machines, Replacing Power Pack with DC Power Plug
Replacing my power pack with a simple DC power plug to power my tortoise switch machines. (Each is connected to a central DC power bus)
Is this just a straight forward connection to my DC power bus, (either soldier or terminal strip), or is any special wiring and/or additional accessories needed?
Thanks,
Joe
Demise of Polk's Hobby
From email received yesterday.
Polk's manufacturers the AristoCraft Large Scale and RMT O Scale product lines. The AristoCraft provided one of the broadest Large Scale product lines in the industry with generally good quality at a fair price. The recession and Chinese supplier problems really hammered them hard. They will be greatly missed. Note that The Crest electronics products are being spun-off (http://shop.crest-electronics.net/main.sc) to a new operation.

CNW Peninsula Div. RR HO scale Part 1
As promised here are the first round of pictures of the CNW Peninsula - Division. The first is the track plan. The layout room is 29' x 32' with a 6' x 12' extension for the Ashland Yard and a 16" x 13' extension for the off line yard. During operating sessions we use the Ashland Yard to make up trains and then the yard master shoves them back into the off line storage yard to wait for an operator to take the train out onto the main layout.

Project 80085
The 1957 Lionel Girls Train set was a interesting experiment. While not commercially successful it is prized by collectors. I would submit that its commercial failure was that the pink steam locomotive did not have any context.
Today, October 1st, we will see a parade of pink baseball bats, pink sneakers and pink towel in all the professional sports arenas. Pink trimmed race cars circle the race tracks of the US in October. In this spirit of support, we now have a context for a pink steam locomotive and the foundation for Project 80085.

What do you think about loose ballast?
There's lots of great discussion on this site now about foam / sound, etc. One thing keeps coming up; that is, it appears that when ballast is glued down to the roadbed either using diluted white glue or matt medium it greatly increased the transfer of sound and the overall sound level.
roadbed from shingles
I'm kind of a newbie. Anyone try using roofing shingles for roadbed? I couldn't find anything on the web.
