Locos - Rolling stock (general)
Cat Model 12 Grader and IH TD15 Tractor on flat cars
Finally took some time away from the railroad, and got a couple of open top loads complete. Inspiration for deck weathering from a "Model Railroader" article by Paul Dolkos, and blocking from a "Model Railroader" article by Mont Switzer. The blocking pattern is per the "AAR Section 3 Rules Covering the Loading of Road Grading, Road Making, and Farm Equipment Machinery on Open Top Cars", 1960 version.

Since my last post I had glued hydrocal rock castings to the mountains on the newer section and colored them after having glued the tunnel portals and retaining walls in place. The next set of photos shows the progress.
This is the newest section I mentioned in a previous post with the mountains and portals in place.
Methods and Materials for improved realism
This blog is aimed at providing a place to discuss methods and material use for improving the realism of our models, structures rolling stock/locomotives and overall layouts.
I hope to discuss anything and everything that can improve realism.
New Rolling Stock
I recently added to my home road rolling stock. A couple 40’ Accurail gondolas were completed after being set aside for some reason and then forgotten about until I ran across them looking for something else. Intermountain wheels and Kadee Whisker couplers replace the stock items. Homeroad decals are from Bill Brillinger, fellow member here: http://pdc.ca/rr/

This car was scratchbuild with :
-
3D printing parts (roof, floor, doors, details)
-
laser cutting parts (flanks and ends)
-
Evergreen / ATLAS parts
I use for design a CAD software.
Light pipes and LEDs
I have a Kato RS-1 and a Kato/Atlas GP7 which have TCS A4X decoders. I want to install LED lighting and could use some suggestions on how to tap into the light pipes.
Do I cut them back and drill a recess into the end to accept the LED? Can I drill a hole into the underside of the light pipe and insert the LED there? Should I paint the clear plastic pipe, and should I use black, silver, or something else? Having lighted number boards is not important.

Now that I have gone over most of the build for my layout up to present day (I will take pics of the newest table with the mountains and rock faces in place and post them soon), I thought I would show some of the details I have been working on like tunnel portals, bridges and structures. Since I didn't take any before pics of the portals or bridges before I painted/weathered them, I found pics online of what they look like out of the box.
