Steam Switchers on the Mainline

I had a question pertaining to the use of steam switchers particularly geared towards the Great Northern but also other transition era railroads as well.

I recently came across a GN 0-8-0 yard switcher in one of my books on the GN where classification lights were added periodically for service outside the yard in Grand Forks, ND. My question is what kind of jobs were steam switchers used on with the GN and other roads requiring them to go out on the mainline?

Athearn flywheel sleeve

Does any company make a sleeve to allow Athearn bluebox type flywheels that have a 3 mm motor shaft diameter to be used on the newer can motors that have a 2 mm shaft diameter?

Suggestions?

Thanks

Collector or modeler?

When I was a younger modeler I wanted this car or that locomotive. Sometimes I'd search eBay international listings to find something I wanted from overseas. I could and still sometimes go to a train show and fill my arms with stuff.  But as I've matured I'm less interested in collecting and more interested in modeling. I'm currently working on plans for modeling two different prototypes of which no models exists.

Anybody else here find themselves shifting from. Collector to modeler?

Are Metal Wheelsets Worth it?

I have rolling stock mainly consisting of older tyco and some trainset quality life-like cars that I am using for my switching layout. They all not have body mounted Kadees and the question remains should I convert them to Metal Wheelsets? I have 18 cars being used on the "layout" and was curious what is the cheapest/most economic way to get enough for them all? I as many of you know have an extremely small budget so whatever help you can give would be appreciated!
