FICT boxcars, part 3
Vacation continues, and more work is done on the boxcar. It has a roof, grab irons, brake wheel, vent doors on the ends and some details on the door. Still to be done: stirrup steps, roofwalk, paint, lettering, and "distressing" of the finish.
BLI Website Pictues An "Unpainted" Diesel Engine Without Detail Parts ???
Do any unpainted/undecorated HO diesel locomotives come without the detail parts unattached? So that .... you can attach them yourself after you paint and decal the engine?
I didn't think so until I saw this unpainted PARAGON3 SD7 on their website.
I'm a novice who is interested in painting some engines into my own fictitious railroad paint scheme. Having all the details off would make it so much easier for me.
Thanks
Jim
More progress on FICT boxcars
As my vacation continues, so does work on my freelance, narrow gauge freight cars. What was a basic chassis with ends and a deck yesterday, is now this:
3/4 view. Mostly stripwood, formed wire for grabirons, kadee On3 couplers. Still needs door hardware and a roof, and I think the door needs some kind of bracing board. Oh, and a brake wheel, and since this is supposed to be old-school, end ventilation hatches at some point.

Scratchbuilding Boxcars for the FICT
Behold, for it is vacation time again, which means I finally have time to really work on my railroad! First project up for work was reworking my rolling workshop. I obtained a (cheapish, wooden) microwave cart with two lower shelves and a single drawer, and sorted and piled my project supplies on it. If anyone asks, I can take pictures of this later.
Powering a Lindbergh (Hawk) San Francisco Cable Car.
The NMRA Indian Nations Division (Tulsa OK) is having a module competition this year. The module must be no more than 576 square inches and have a working rail vehicle.
I have a couple of the old Lindbergh (Hawk) San Francisco cable car kits and have decide to build a 6" by *' module depicting a scene for these cars. I will probably use this as an excuse to try the Arduino PC's to control it.
Weathering Cars
As everybody is really getting on board with weathering lately, I thought I would share a couple of cars that I have done recently.
11/11/17
I added this car to the list. As you can see, I am trying oil paints as per the recent MRH article. This is just the first layer as oils are very slow drying. The oils I am using are a "value line" at my local AC Moore and at only $3.99 a tube, it made the initial investment for 4 colors under $20 bucks.
Ned Help -- Correct Canon & Co. fans for SP SD-9 and GP-9's
Hello all,
I'd like to replace the fans on my P2K SD9 and GP9's but I'm having trouble knowing which ones would be appropriate. I do' not see a correct replacement from Canon and company listed. Which 36 and 48 would work for mid 70's GRIP program 9E/R's?
Also referencing the picture in the link below there is an odd flat top 36" fan on the rear of this GP9. What would be appropriate?
Best Way to Re-Attach Metal Running Boards?
A few months ago I picked up an Athearn FMC covered hopper with etched-metal running boards that had bowed up in a couple places. As seen below, they are attached with a series of pins into the carbody. Two of these pins are loose on one side and one on the other. What would be the best way to re-attach these? I haven't found a way to get inside the car so I *think* that is out of the question.
Side dump hopper bottom ore cars
Does anyone know a good source for side dump hopper bottom ore cars that would have been manufactured by the Pressed Steel Car Company in the early 1900's? I am modeling the Verde Tunnel and Smelter RR in my home town of Clarkdale AZ, which has several PSCC side dump hopper bottom ore cars ranging from 50, 60 and 70 ton capacity cars.
