Getting Started

new switch out shuts off power!

Hey guys. I'm getting back into the hobby after several decades and have run into an electrical issue. Having added a new switch out to my HO scale DC powered layout I find that throwing the switch shuts the whole layout off which I assume means it's creating a short or something. I'm embarrassed to post here because I know I've done something bone headed that anyone with an ounce of electrical know-how would spot a mile off but if anyone can help in words of one syllable I'd appreciate it. The problem switch out is at the extreme left of the picture below.

A beginner's concerns.

I have been busy with a non-railway modeling project for a maritime museum _ a working lift-span bridge. It is part of a larger project called The Port of Ballina. Future projects will include modeling the actual Port docks and slipways, etc. However, not far away was the Ballina railway station.

TOMA resources?

Is there a definitive place to get information about all things TOMA?

ie: A primer article or post that explains TOMA and give links to resources?

I see a lot of questions about starting a small manageable layout on other venues and it would be great to have a single place to point people to to get started with the concept.

What Motive Power to Use?

I'm leaning toward building an HO shelf, switching layout based around the International Harvester plant in Ft.

I could use some help...

So...  I'm a newbie.  My experience with trains...  back in the mid 80's my dad bought me a Tyco Santa Fe train set that fit on a 4'x4' piece of plywood.  I'm pretty sure it was HO scale.  It was a big circle and had little "stops" that snapped onto the track so you could run the engine over them, and back up on the stop which would slightly raise the wheels.  Continuing to give power would turn little wheels that in turn would turn small servo like wheels that would maybe load cattle onto the train, or run a small conveyor belt th

New to model trains, wanting to set up for disabled child

I am wanting to get a set up for my disabled child. He has physical as well as cognitive issues. I don’t want to continue to purchase battery operated trains with cheap plastic track that he is unable to manipulate without breaking the tabs. He also has issues with getting the cars to sit on the tracks correctly so that they will run around without falling off. I just need to know a starting point as I have no clue with anything means or what’s available for disabled people in regards to model trains. I don’t understand the difference in gauge, dc, doc power, etc.

Airbrush Recommendations

Hello, all!

I'm looking for recommendations on equipment to get started with airbrushing (For weathering and eventually custom painting).  I am currently looking at this starter set from Micro-Mark:

https://www.micromark.com/ULTIMATE-AIRBRUSH-OUTFIT

It looks like the various components can be had seperately from other manufacturers at lower prices though.  Is this a quality set to get started with?  Any recommendations for other places to start?  Thanks!

Having fun with trains - model railroader or railroad modeler ?

I must confess, I don’t really care for operations. I have tried it a few times, but honestly I don’t seem to care much for it. For me, the process of backing up an engine to couple some cars, and moving ahead to perform the next operation, just dosn’t excite me all that much. For some reason, after a very short time, that whole process just seems to get boring for me. Sorry, but it;s true. But that is just me.
