Getting Started

A 4 by 8 for Thecad and other newbies

This is a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood that didn't grow.  It has provided plenty of enjoyment for the forty five years I've had the pleasure of visiting and operating it.  It remains covered most of the time now.  When the great grandchildren are a little older I'm sure that it will come to life a little more regularly.  The cover works well, no dust and easily removed!

Wet behind the ears Newbie

I am as new as you can get in model railroading.  I had a couple of train sets when I was a child but here recently I started getting the bug to get into model railroading.  In my teens and early adulthood, I built models and a few dioramas.  I can see how model railroading incorporates these and I can have function instead of staring at it.  Heck, I just got done building the fly zapper static grass applicator.  Not sure how well it works yet since I don’t have any static grass to test it out with, but it shows that I am not afraid to build things.

Track Planning and Signals

Hello all. I am returning to model railroading after a 40 year absence. I have started a small 36" x 80" N scale door layout for now to learn the new ways of model railroading and to get the hang of wiring and terrain building as well. I have a 16' x 16' area for a later layout that like most, have plans within plans so to speak. My first question is " When planning a layout, do you also try to plan for signals and wiring per se or do you build a track plan and then worry about signals later on "? This unfortunately leads to my second question/statement.

New Plan

Hi guys, here is my first attempt at my soon to be built track plan. Please feel free to give constructive criticism and suggestions.

My main concern is I have to many tracks and that I have not left enough room for scenery, roads etc at the industry section.

12 or 24 volts for LED layout lighting?

As more of us change over or start lighting for our layouts LEDs are becoming a go to.  I'm writing these questions not only for me but for the general modeling population.  I'm sure there are a lot more questions and answers left.  It might even be time to start a topic!?!

Lighting the Old West

So, I'm kinda "New/Old Stock" here (mostly new... apparently a lot has changed in the past 30 years! Who knew?) and I plan to model the Old West, and reading the magazine, and watching the videos, I love the idea of lighting, but, modeling the Old West, I suppose I would have to light my town with gas lamps, and oil lamps... does anyone make those? Any recommendations? I'm still making decisions on my layout (it will be a while before I can actually build, but, I've been buying things I fancy for when I do build...

A Highschool Model Railroad Club

It may be time for a school model railroad club mark II. This is going to be a very different approach in that it will be modular and the craziest part 3 rail O scale....

Block signals

Has anyone used the  Azatrax TS2 block signal control board. It looks like a good product. I have sent them 2 e-mails trying to get more info but so far no reply. Are they still in business? Any help is appreciated.

Tight Curve Loco

I'm thinking about building a super small tabletop layout. Kato makes 117mm track (approx 4.5" raduis). Just wondering if there's ANYTHING that will run around those curves. If I can find an engine that works, I may build a small layout around it.

Thanks-Tim
