Getting Started

DC and DCC - crazy? (And last controls thread outta me for a bit!)

Do people ever run both on the same layout (not at the same time)? I was getting all caught up in automation for DCC, then realized $200 worth of sensors and a cheap power pack can provide all the automation I want, for when I want the train running in the background while I do other things. But of course the DCC features would be fun for active railroading, It seems easy enough to put the two systems on separate power supplies, and maybe just have to run a second set of hookups for the turnout actuators.

Crazy??

You guys are awesome

I can’t believe the amount of help and input I’ve gotten from this place in 2 days. All kinds of input, different perspectives, and all with good attitude. I’m glad I found this place. Thanks for making it what it is.

Digitrax Zephyr for first control system?

Would anyone have reservations about using Digitrax Zephyr as a first train controller? I know NCE has a lot of praise but I hate the screen and generally don't like TV remotes. The Zephyr is $200, seems to have all the programming I need, has a decent display and also has nice add-on remotes. I don't love the layout for full-time use but it has nice add-on remote options. So $200 to get running, $300/$350 for remote/wireless. It seems like a bit much for a train or two on a small track, but the train I ordered does have full 28 F-functions plus lots of CVs to play with.

Choosing HO track/brand

Aloha!

I’m just getting started with model trains and am trying to figure out what brand track to get. I apologize if this has been asked a million times, I did try searching for awhile before joining and posting.

I’m going to start with a small layout with conventional track, but will have a side track to expand off which leads to my questions:

Can different brands be joined together if they are the same code? Do some work better with particular brands?

Tsunami 2 decoder function mapping

G'day, I am curious about the soundtraxx tsunami 2 diesel decoder function mapping.

The manual PDF file indicates that the default functions can be exchanged.

I desire to exchange some of the first 9 sound functions for functions in higher function button numbers.

To negate using the shift key to access the higher numeral functions.

The bell is not generally a feature of Aussie locomotives, so I desire to replace the bell with another sound function.

Cheap Multimeter reviewed by a friend.

I guess I am biased once in a while.  I think that doing DCC without a multimeter is like walking in the dark in the woods at night with no moon.  If it beeps, even softly, tells me when the wire is connected, tells me that I’ve got power, tells me how many ohms an unreadable resistor is, or checks to see if I’ve burned out an LED, then I could be happy.  If it costs one tenth of what mine cost maybe it could make someone else happy too.

Just getting back to the hobby.  I have this engine and have no record of what  it is  i think it is a Gp-3  is that right?who made it - Atlas?

Desk or Workbench?

So we've moved into a new house and I have a 13.5' x 16.5' workshop in the basement.  I've built one side of the workshop, and, if you look at the attached photo, you'll see that I have an 8-foot workbench that is 42" from the floor.  At the far end of the room, you can see my laser cutter and its stand, which is about 48" wide.
