Getting Started

Airbrush advice?

I want to get into airbrushing.  I guess I have a budget of 200 to $300 depending. It will be for model railroad scenery and aging. I am not a trained artist, so I don’t see doing a lot of heavy duty artwork with this.  I figure if I’m going to go ahead and spend the money, I want to see if a brand has some longevity from beginner to the professional realm.

A lot of forums I’m looking at seem to like this brand.

Should I change to HO guage?

I have been running G scale or Large scale IE 2" track for 20 years.  My Locomotives die too quickly, I've gone through 4 in 20 years, I run my system for only 4 - 5 weeks, but constantly on a looped layout for 10 or so hours a day.  This is a Christmas layout that runs through and around a Christmas village.

A nice, small, HO scale, fairly cheap steam engine?

I'm working on a little shelf layout, and I want a small steam engine to run occasionally. It's a switching layout, so I think a 2-8-0 is the biggest I'd go for, and if it's a tank engine that's even better. Since I need to buy basically all my materials and supplies in one go instead of dipping into a built-up stockpile, I'm looking for something on the cheaper end.

Aligning Curved Track on Module

Hey All,

I am designing my track plan for my HO layout and I plan to have 3 modules that come together to form the completed layout (two are stored away on shelves while one stays stationary the whole time). I have done a bit of research and it seems that you can join up two modules with curved track running between the join. That being said, I really haven't found any info on how to specifically lay, cut or align the curved track between two modules. Everything seems to be for straight track which is fairly straight forward.

New Build questions and intro

Hey,

I'm new here, but have been reading the posts for a while trying to gather a bunch of info to start my new project.

There are no train/hobby stores near me here in Central Texas.  Back in '98 we moved from Columbus Ohio, the home of "The Train Station" on Indianola,,, (a fantastic shop that had everything one could want) where I had a 4x8 built out in the basement.  That was pre- bluetooth, smart phones, first gen Digitrax, etc.  So with that said I am semi-familiar with how this all works.

Requesting recommendations for complete newbie - DCC, RasPI, JMRI, ...?

I'm a complete newbie interested in jumping into model trains with these main objectives:

1) Finding fun ways to control the trains automatically using custom software that I'll write

2) Setting up easy ways for a young grandson who *loves* trains to run and play with them

Stripping and painting plastic models

I have been  using 90+% alcohol to strip plastic models for repainting for a while.  I was wondering if anyone can  share their experience using Denatured Alcohol from the paint store instead of the local drug store brands. What are your normal routines for preparing to paint after stripping,  or maybe you have another method other than alcohol that works well that you can tell me about.

Thanks for your help and thoughts.

Joseph

I noticed lately that the photos I post loose some definition for some reason. I haven't changed my method of creating them or posting them yet they do not loose some definition when I post them on other websites.

Here is an example of it the a photo posted on this forum

And the same one taken from another site that I posted it on.

Erie and Pittsburgh Subdivision Build Thread

Welcome to the construction log of  the Erie and Pittsburgh Subdivision.

The E&P is a layout based off the railroad industry around Pittsburgh, PA in the late 1970s when the region was still producing steel on a very large scale.  The E&P will be including Amtrak, B&LE, B&O, Conrail, Union Railroad, and possibly the P&LE.

The E&P is a N scale layout running on NCE DCC.
