Getting Started

starting new layout in N scale

Finally  going to start a layout  after our move. It will be a 10 x10 El  in a modular form so can be moved to shows and display out kits. If anyone is in the SW Missouri area between Springfield and Joplin and would like to help drop me a note. We are in Lockwood right off of Hwy 160

Need advice for future project once I level my scale modelling skills.

Hello everyone,

 This is my first post, and decided to join the forums after hearing about the magazine. I am a beginner in the hobby after my interest was rejuvenated so I am starting out by assembling model freight car kits and figuring out where to go next.

Stupid Questions

I'm just tinkering with getting started in N scale.  What's really driving this is the fact that I enjoy building miniatures and have constructed several German/Bavarian buildings that I'm thinking need a home with a working train.  So I did some research and found I was interested in the K.Bay.sts.b line (Bavarian, pre nationalization of the railroads, ERA I).  I purchased an appropriate engine and some passenger cars.  I hope I can get set on the right track, so to speak.  I have a small space and I just want an oval for now.

First Post getting ready to construct.

I have been telling myself for 45 years that I am going to build a railroad.  After seeing DCC demonstrated, I am sold.  I have always play with DC Lionel & HO as a kid but I am going N scale for the size & scope.  I am planning on 2 Atlas plan bundles, 1 to start off and get the learning curve going eventually adding a second.  Any thoughts of using Atlas N-8 TWICE AROUND VIA TURNOUTS bundle as a starter layout.  Seems to include the necessary trackage to learn the basics.

Pittsburgh Yard - Who transfers what to where...seeking clarification...

OK, for the Pittsburgh Freight Yard, cars coming in from the North and East come in on the P&A.  The next direct destination for these cars is mostly (80-85%) the Pittsburgh Jct RR, the PRR (5-10%) with the rest for P&A served customers.  Now the Pittsburgh Jct RR forwards the cars to the P&LE, P&WV, and B&O.  My question is would the P&A bother blocking the cars by RR (i.e.

Shopping list for a novice weatherer... anything I really need?

Okay, so I've been into model railroading for a while now and I want to give weathering a try now.  I have no weathering experience, and my budget is limited.  I want to model the transition era.  I'm trying to find any simple, inexpensive, realistic techniques and the supplies that are necessary.  So, in other words, I'm asking for help putting a shopping list together.wink

DCC++ with Arduino & JMRI

Hi All As a (70 plus year) new comer to Model Rail Roading, and having stated with the intention of 'Automating' (by converting to Digital) an old Marklin (three track) system, I have run into some trouble! that is;

After connecting a new Arduino Uno Rev 3 and Arduino Motor Shield units and interfacing them with JMRI as described by many enthusiasts, I am unable to to get them to run! - both in windows & Mac environments.

English Railway and Its Origin (History of the British Railway)

Presentation:

In 1602, there apparently existed a railroad in Nottinghamshire in England. In spite of the fact that it isn't checked and is bantered by different students of history yet the cause of the English Railway can be followed back from that period. By sixteenth century cable car streets were being utilized. The principal open railroad was the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. This railroad moved the two travelers just as cargo.

Help identifying S Scale 0-4-0 Steam Switcher

Hello All,

Could I get some help identifying this S Scale Steam swiitcher. It's made of metal, and weighs 1 Lb 7 oz.

Inherited as one of several engines from my father who was avid modeler. I'm consdering which to keep for my kids and which to sell.

No mfgr notation anywhere. I'm wondering if it's a painted black brass type?

Pics attached.

It runs though think it needs some attention to run on a track unassisted
