Getting Started

Fear of Heights

I've noticed plenty has been posted about having a buffer zone or barrier between the edge of the track and the edge of the layout preventing a derailment followed by the catastrophic plunge off the edge of the world.  I am planning my layout and have a open deck girder bridge that spans an abyss, now I plan on building in a barrier to catch derailments but I have noticed that there are many examples of layouts with high, open deck bridges that do not have a way to save a derailment.

1920's/30's rolling stock.

Well, here we go! I've seemed to have developed an interest in the mid war rail roads, but info in the UK is not easy to get so I thought it was time to annoy every one. I'm thinking of modeling a small shortline rr in the west Virginia or Maryland area  so I would like to know of any web sites that would be of use. I also want to represent a company that is surviving rather than thriving so I would ideas on rolling stock that would be suitable - I was thinking of the bachmann U.S.R.A..

Three Road Making Methods:

Method one:

This method uses Durhams Water Putty something used for filling wood cracks that comes in a powder that is then mixed with water. Unlike some putties and such this expands and doesn't crack like some. The photo shows it painted and in a finished scene

Method 2:

Greetings from Bulgaria

Hi there,

I wanted to say hello and introduce myself as I plan to become active on these pages as I go through my adventure, and share it with you guys. I've been a lurker for a little while, having just finished reading every back issue of MRH (largely while I should have been working! for shame!) and also become active searching the forum for answers to questions I have.

Designing a Scene

I am about to plan/design my first module.  It will be a town scene in Vermont.  I have the track plan worked out, but would like a referral to an article or a blog or whatever, that can advise me on the planning process.  It might advise me about first determining elevations, or structures or whatever.  Any recommendations?

Anyone in South Bend, IN area interested in forming round robin group?

Dying to get out of the armchair and find others who need mutual help and inspiration in getting their model railroads built.

What to get

Been out of the hobby a looong time, but decided to jump back in here's my question;

I plan on geting a Digi-Trax system this weekend, probably their starter type DCS set up. I have seen some MTH & Bachmann locos that really appeal to me. Are the different manufacturers all compatible with a system like this? Do some brands work best on certain brands or is this just my ignorance...?

Multi level/ grades and radius

So I have decided to build a two level layout. A single level in my 13 by 40 foot space just seems to not fit my goals. So I have some questions. First is typical space between levels. Backdrops typically are 18 to 24 inches high so I am guessing that is the starting point.

hello from accross the pond.

hello one and all from across the pond. Just restarting the hobby after quite a long break so looking forward to being here

Designing a layout and trackplan.

I have built several layouts in the past and here are some things I am carefully considering as I plan my next and last layout.  Watching model trains go round and round on a series of loops gets old real fast. Take the switch and traverse a different loop and its still more of the same. What is entertaining is having a starting point and a destination and a reason for that destination. Example, I am building a waterfront switching area about 9 foot long. It will eventually be part of a much larger railroad.
