Getting Started

DCC and Sound

Just getting started, but would like to invest in a DCC/Sound controller. I plan on getting an Athearn DCC engine with built in sound. What would be the best starter controller for the above and how tough is it to install.

Thanks

Hello

Hello all. My name is Chris and I'm out in the Charleston, SC area. I've always been a train enthusiast in HO scale but never really did more than set up an oval track once in a while to pass the time. My grandson will be 4 this year on September 11 and I was thinking of doing a train table that he and I could enjoy now and later when his little brother gets older. For now he enjoys his Thomas The Tank Engine wood set, but I'm sure he'll get a kick out of one that he doesn't have to push.

Knew to HO USA theme

Hya everyone, been into model railways for years and decided to have a go at a HO Switching layout.

board will be  a (L-shape) 8ft x 2ft with a 2 rd fiddle d.

could anyone direct me towards any post etc that may get me started.Ive already bought way too much rolling stock, buildings etc, seem to be trying to fit too much in.

thanks

Jim

Newbie

Hi my name is Bobby I'm new to the model train world, I'm from Massachusetts, and I want to build a ho train set from the northeast, I am thinking of starting out with a boston and maine setup, I was just a little confused in where to begin. Is there a big difference in quality with each model company and Is there a difference when purchasing a locomotive such as beginner to expert or is it all just about preference.

thank you

Flex track

I am getting a little confused on laying down flex track, which side of the radius should the sliding track be on inside or outside and how does this work on a s curve.   Thank you  GEM

Marx 3 rail

Yep, I'm working with the old Marx 3-rail tracks and trucks/wheels.
Does anyone still use this stuff?
I'm making a dedicated layout, about 4'x4', hilly/mountain winter scene.
I plan to strip these tracks off their ties, re-bend them to 8"radius curves, convert it to a 2-rail system, and build short little engine and cars to traverse the town.
Is any of this possible?
I presume the third rail was to supply lighting?
Is it possible to convert to 2 rail?
How do these systems work?

Paint

Getting back in the hobby after 25 years.  Find paint choices have changed. Will be attempting a shelf switching layout on the Maryland & Delaware RR.  Anyone  know what shade of red is used on the locomotives RS3, and CF7's, looks almost like caboose red. Also need source for decals  in HO. Thanks in advance.  Zeke

h.o. layout HELP

I am new to the H.O. Train track layouts.  I have a 4x8 table and a 4x6 table with a 2x2 section at the head attaching the two.  I have ez track and also atlas regular track. I need advice or info to make a decent layout.  I have the EZ track as I am 75 and my sight is not as good putting the Atlas track together. I would like to make 3 areas such as a Farm area, Town area and a Industrial area.  Also a Mountain Tunnel and an elevated area.  Any help would be Appreciated.
