Getting Started
Painting and Primer...
Hi All, I received couple structure kits (one plastic and one laser-cut) for my birthday and am looking at painting them before I start assembly...
I have a can of Model Master white primer, can I use that on the plastic and wood kits? Is it going to cover some of the detail? I've used it on a caboose and it didn't seem to hurt the detail, but wasn't sure about using it on the wood kit..
DC-vs- DCC (Speed)
This is NOT your normal DC -vs- DCC thread... :)
We recently upgraded to DCC (Digitrax Zephyr+) and one thing we've noticed is that the locos are slower on DCC than DC... To me, it's a function of the old DC power Pack versus the Zephyr+, but I was just wondering why...
It's not the loco's themselves since the two I added decoders to are now slower than the other DC locos...
Getting started in Proto48 - where do I find a RTR or close to RTR engine?
I'm modeling a 1900 era layout (Delaware & Hudson) in O-scale. One of my goals is to have accurate sized track and properly scaled rolling stock. It looks like micro-engineering code 100 O scale track may be a good starting spot for track. However, I'm struggling to find a small (2-6-0 or 4-4-0) steam engine that would fit the track. Initially the engines will be DC powered, though eventually they will be battery powered.

Angled backdrop?
I was thinking about the layout that I want to build, and one of the things I really want to incorporate is a proper backdrop, and ideally some horizon lights between the backdrop and the scenery. That got me thinking, what about angling the backdrop so that the top is closer to the front than the bottom is? It would possibly cause more of a color gradient from the horizon lights, as well as possibly reflecting more of them forward into the scene instead of illuminating the underside of the valance.
Very First Kato DC N-Scale Track - Trouble Wiring Switches - noob
Hello,
Below is my first layout with N scale Unitrack. The point of contention is with with power being lost when I change either switch ( LH turn 20-207 / RH turn 20-208) by hand, and bring the train on the inside half loop. I've checked the track with a volt meter and sure enough it looks like the power is gone.
I only want to run one engine at a time until I get the hang of this, so there are no isolation joints to the best of my knowledge and I think the switches are set to live-frog.
Any help would be appreciated.
New layout help
Hello guys, I'm Andrea from Italy.
I'm going to start my new shelf layout.
My benchwork is an "L" shape, one side 450 cm and one side 250 cm dephtness 30 cm.
At the 2 end of benchwork deepness is 60 cm to let minimum radium for curve granted.
I decide to make a modular layouts (50 cm per module)
Scale is N scale and i whish to focus on steam loco in europe.
Any of you have some layouts suggestions?
here it is a starting idea.

Coming straight out of a turnout
In my progression to figuring out how to do all of this, I am using XTRKCAD to get a more final layout. Having said that, I don't think this question is software specific. Hopefully its not an incredibly obvious answer.
I am creating turnouts, and when I come out of those turnouts I want to have a track that runs parallel to the original track (I'm creating a passenger station). How do I calculate the proper radius turn to come out of a turnout so that the resulting track will run alongside the track that you have turned out from?
Basement layout searching for initial concept
There is some really good advice on this site and sometimes it can feel daunting to someone new to the hobby, but we have to start somewhere!
Here is my situation and I welcome all of your advice.
