Modeling Urban N Scale as a Beginner

I am basically new to the hobby. I have had it in the back of my mind all of my life, but outside of a subscription to MRR last year and a book here and there, I know very little about what I should actually do.

finally got started

Finally got moving, slowly as it is.

The benchwork is modular, based on the Battleframe series of modular games table bases by Back 2 Base-ix, though if I was to try again I would NOT have a layout this small modular, with nothing to align the track but the flatness of the tabletop. The magnets used to connect these things are strong, but have this annoying tendency to not fit in the holes correctly. It would also reduce disconnection of track.

Video Tutorials for SCARM layout software

Here is something interesting and really useful for SCARM track planning software beginners - a series of video tutorials, created and narrated by Ruud Boer, where he explains how to start and work with the program in easy steps. The first video is available here:

Room Size Layout Electrical Needs

Good evening all.  I am looking to embark on the "lifetime layout" journey this winter.  I have never built a basement size layout before.  The unfinished side of my basement will finally begin to house my dream railroad - 25' x 30' double deck Erie Lackawanna Marion 2nd Sub circa 1964. I'm planning on installing the necessary electrical, drywall and drop ceiling this winter so as to begin bench work and track laying next fall.

Looking for a helper.....

......on building my layout.  I live in Clifton Park, NY (suburb of Albany) and am wondering if any of our readers might live nearby and want to join me.  I'm retired and generally work on the project during the day and on weekends.

If this is an inappropriate post please let me know.

Thanks,

Peter

Animation of aircraft (on a layout)

I have a question about LED's. I am into action dioramas and WWII Military Aircraft that come alive when I "flip the switch".

R/C conversion

Hi all,

I am new to R/C locomotives and have no idea what i am doing!

I have an old (20 years old) r/c 6 channel transmitter and receiver that was used in a model aircraft. Can I use this set up to run multiple locos? do the locos all need 6 channel receivers? Or is there a new set I can buy for reasonable cost to do the same job? My layout is 0 gauge and I have 20 or more locos that I eventually want to convert so that I can do away with the track wiring and inherent problems that presents with outdoor modelling in the UK.

Many thanks

Carl

What Loco to buy?

New guy here. I'm constructing a 4 x 8 layout for DCC. I want to purchase a decent locomotive DCC ready. preferably a Santa Fe F7 unit. I don't want to take out a loan to do this. I'm a retired electronics technician and have installed decoders in starter set loco's. I'm looking for something with more power and reliability. I just don't know what brand to choose. I'd like to stay under $100.00 if possible.

Thanks Gerry

Locomotive Wheel maint

How do you clean locomotive wheels?  I have a few the have been in storage for a long time.

Is the some type of alcohol or do you use fine sandpaper or Scotchbrite?

Also, some have/had rubber rings for traction.  Where can I get replacements?
