Getting Started

Sometimes Cheap is not the way to go.

I will start off now and say i'm sorry if I offend anyone and that this may have been an isolated incident.

About a week ago I picked up a Bachmann DCC GP30 for $50 at my LHS - Thankfully!  My son liked it and had no problems running it, but it was loud (Motor noise) and jerky.  The loud motor noise I could have lived with since we were upgrading from a Bachmann DC starter set, but the jerkyness caused constant uncoupling and turned a fun time for my 10 Year old son into work time having to stop and recouple the cars every 10 minutes or so.

Newbie and newbie's son starting the hobby.

Hello all.  Just starting in the hobby.  My Son (10 years old) and I went to a trains expo in town and met a fellow MRH member, Bill Michales, to see his winning HO Saw mill.  After talking to Bill for a bit and walking around the expo loaded with old, new, used and overwhelming amounts of "I want to do that"

New York City Freight

I am finally getting back into the hobby after a 25+ year hiatus. Wow have things changed. I am looking for advice on my beginnings. My plan is to model the New York and Atlantic currently operating in NYC. I already found out getting locos is tough. The advice I am seeking, is good sources for urban scenery. I would love to combine NYC subway, NYAR local freight, and the CSX that travels in through the Hell's gate Bridge. Being an armor modeler, I love realism and weathering. I welcome any and all input. Thanks for your time.

Starting my HOn30 Quarry Line

Starting my lime stone quarry module. Needed a change of pace from building R/C cranes and R/C steam engines. I have in mind to model a lime stone quarry. There's was one located not far from me in Leroy, New York. It's located between the old B, R, & P and the Lehigh Valley.

Trying out a track arrangement.

Getting back into the hobby

I just joined the forum, thinking about getting back into the hobby.  I have trains my whole life, Lionels, and N Scale. LIonel's are for around the tree and holiday time.

Returning to the Hobby

I am getting back into the hobby after many years absence. I have been modeling since my first Lionel 027 set that I got in 1954. My son and I got involved in a train club in Ottawa, Ont. when we moved here in 1989 and travelled with the club's modular layout to train shows in Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston, Prescott, and Syracuse for several years. Then the boy discovered girls and model trains went the way of the Dodo.

Now he has approached me to help him build a layout for his 3 boys. So I am back.

the $500 Southern Pacific layout...in N

From my blog (http://sopacincg.com)

So, Model Railroad Hobbyist E-Zine had a track planning contest to design and build a layout for $500. The $500 includes track, a power pack, motive power, cars, buildings and scenery.

Good Starter Sets for Newbie ??

Can anyone suggest a good starter set for a beginner?

Kato Unitrack turnouts - Newbie Question...

In looking at what track I want to get for my first layout, I was through Kato Unitrack... They have two different turnouts, a #4 and #6, both appear to be remote/electrical.

Can these switches be operated manually as well, or do they need power to make them switch? Are the switches momentary, or do they run power constantly to keep the switch locked one direction or another? I expect I'll setup the tracks a few different ways as I experiment with what works, and would prefer to start without hooking them up to power...
