Getting Started

Another old timer coming back after 35-40 years.

Greetings,

I am retired, 78 years old and living in the mountains of N. Alabama.  Have been interested in model railroading just about all my life.  Started with an O guage Marx train set when I was in 3rd grade.  I have had an interest in logging railroads for quite some time.  Don't know if I will ever get a layout built or not.  I plan on building a Shay and some logging cars and buildings.  Really appreciate the free online magazines.

Hello--coming back after many years away from the hobby

  Good Morning,

By way of an introduction I just wanted to stop by the forum and say hello.  I'm returning back to model railroading after a break of about 30 years or so--wow, where does the time go?  I had a Tyco set when I was a kid back in Boise, running it on a 4x8 that took up about 3/4 of my bedroom.

Help with n switching yard

Hi everyone, another newbe here. Im in the process of building an N scale layout in 4 modules. The module for the

switching/yard is 1ft by 3ft. Is this possible in this small area and still be functional? I am having a hard time designing

it. Thanks for your help.

I'm back!

I'm back! I've finally got that laptop I've been needing. My absence was caused by computer problems which hopefully won't recur.

I am now in the process of moving everything model railroading related to the laptop so I won't infect anything business related since the laptop won't have anything to do with the other computers on my network.

Anyway I haven't had much time for railroading due to various problems which have cropped up ovef the last few weeks.

Car float track dimentions

I want to model a Car float.  I've looked, in the wrong places, for track measurements.  I need the track measurements from where the float meets up with the apron.  I would think this should be a constant from float to float so that float could be used at various aprons.  If I don't find this measurement I'll just start making my floats with my own measurements.  Thanks for any help.

New people in the hobby

I have been looking at many of the posts from people getting into this fabulous hobby. One thing that I have noticed is we new people do not know what questions to ask because we have no experience. I compare this to friends asking me what Harley Davidson they should buy when they have little riding experience. They have no experience as to what they want or even what questions to ask. I have worked out a whole list for them.

DCC Impulses: Wired Decoder Installation Part 1

Well here goes nothing, been reading Model Railroad Hobbyist since you all started. Well it has taken that long for me to figure out how to make a post, I guess you call it that. I just want to thank Bruce for his time and trouble getting this article printed. You have helped me a lot, and I mean that sincerely, please keep up the Great Work.

Modern 4-axle engines

Hello,

I am looking for some modern 4 axle engines if anyone can help me out-these are to be used for a branch line.  I will be getting two genset engines down the road, but looking for other 4 axle engines that are out there that are seen on rail lines today
