Getting Started
Have lots of HO & Lionel parts - how to get from what I have to a 'nice' layout
I have a new house with a large basement, approx 20' x 25' available for trains.
Want (eventual dream layout)
- an On30 proto-freelance railroad that interchanges with an O gauge Delaware & Hudson railroad, circa 1900
- a way to slowly design and build the above layout
Currently Have
- A large amount of HO gauge, code 100, Athearn snap-track, and probably 50 miscellaneous HO gauge rolling stock (almost all Athearn blue-box, with plastic couplers).

Returning after many years away.
Hello all!
Well, I am returning to the hobby after many years away! I am excited about all of the advancements, but a few things I find really shocking:
1. The quality of the locomotives and rolling stock has just sky-rocketed!
2. The price has sky rocketed as well...
My plans are to build a small shelf-switching layout. I have not decided on theme, location, or anything at this point. I have previously built an HO 4X8 layout (never finished) and an N scale layout on a door (semi-finished).

What's your "Golden" memory of railroading?
We all have something inside us that fuels the passion. A childhood memory of railfanning or growing up and playing by the rails. Something!!! Without exception, everybody was once a newbie with no experience; nothing but some inspirational memory.

Greetings from South Africa
There are many wonderful things that South Africa has to offer but I'm afraid that RR Hobby Shops are not one of them.
When I was about 7 years old my mother promised me an 'electric train' if I got a good pass at school. We were a poor family and mother could not really afford to buy me a train set when I got a first class pass that year. That was 62 years ago and last year I got tired of waiting (hehe).
New to the hobby
What is the best starter HO set to buy that is under $100? Also, what type of track (EZ track, etc.) would be the best to get if we decide to expand from a 4 x 8 table top in the living room, to a larger area in the garage? Thanks
Another Newbie
I figure I don't have enough hobbies yet (stained glass, RC Airplane build and fly, Metal Detecting, woodworking), so I am thinking about getting back in to model RR. It has been over 30 years since I put away my train set. I have a Sears set with a Gantry Crane. The Loco doesn't work and it has one of those metal power packs with the slide throttle.
My questions are :
can I use any of the track that came with it or is there something better now?
csx layout

Dickens style resources
Hello all,
I am jumping into this forum looking for ideas and help with ideas for my wife's Christmas train. As I described in my first post a few days ago seeking help for an LED circuit, the train comes out once a year for the month of December and resides on a kitchen counter for all to enjoy, including grandchildren.
Initially it was a battery operated plastic train, nearly HO scale, that eventually wore out. Santa brought HO tracks one year, then it started to take on a life of it's own, with new projects identified and completed each year.

Newbie need some guidance!
Hello everyone,
First time poster but train lover since for as long as I can remember! Newbie at train layout, but always dreamed of making my own.
