Getting Started

Opinions on Kato HO track kit
Hello All
I am considering getting started in Model Railroading with this track kit.

I am a newbie and starting from scratch. I realize this isn't the least expensive way to go but it is supposed to be quick and easy to set up and to modify.

Getting started in Aus...
Hi All,
I'm after some advice on layout design & trackplan ideas for my new railroad/layout. Firstly the layout will be in a insulated tin shed in our backyard, dimensions are as follows (conversions supplied from metric to imperial):
Overall dimensions = 7m x 4m (22.96 ft x 13.12 ft)
Overall Space = 28 m2 (301 sq ft)
Scale: HO
Maximum Track Length = 17.5m (can be extended to 21m) or 57.4 ft (can be extended to 68.89 ft)
Minimum Radius = 762mm (30")
Electrical: DCC
Roadbed type and track code for HO
Hi
I apologize if this is a very common question answered often and elsewhere..
Starting from scratch, planning a dual mainline loop, walkin layout approx 15'x30' avail area with 30" radii, a big hidden helix to get to an upper level. Small yard and minimal switching. Planning to use 1/2" plywood subroadbed and laminated hardboard where necessary for clearance. Dont have a lot rolling stock or locos. The best of what I do have is 10 year old non-dcc proto2000 that I will convert to DCC.
A (Still) Newbie’s look at Model Railroading (with Accompanying Musical References)
Morning Fellow Modelers,
Starting over my version
My story is kind of hilarious but also sad. Briefly it all happened 22 years ago when my then wife decided she had enough of me and moved out with my collection of HO trains, a collection I started 12 years before that. in the beginning of 2009 my son brought what was left of the tracks, loco's and rolling stock. Obviously after years of lying in a storage shed on the farm there was and still is a lot of damage control to be done, so far I have succeeded in restoring all the electric units and diesels to running order.
How do I.......
I have a PSX-AR reverse loop module and a Lenz LK100 reverse loop module, I would like someone to show me on the picture that I uploaded where to place them.
Also is the bus wire connected end to end? or do it just terminate at each end. Right now I have it connected end to end and could this be the cause of voltage drop. Meaning when I run an engine it stops at a various places on my tracks layout.
The uploaded picture seems to be small, hopefully you can increase it's size and mark where the modules go.
DCC at a reasonable cost
I have a mix of old Athern and new and old Atlas locos. All my friends are using Digitrax. I can't spend a fortune on decoders and a control system. The layout as envisioned will be a 1 or 2 man operation. I really like the idea of simplified wiring and being able to MU dissimilar locos. I would like to occasionally be able to run a dc loco by itself. Any advise on where to start? Chris
Getting Re-Started
After an initial start in 1987,,,,,then transfers,,,transfers,,,,etc.....Now retired,,,getting re-started. We have always been fascinated with trains,,,,
A lot sure seems to have changed in 20+ years,,,
I was a novice then,,,and still am......just finished benchwork for a 52x90 layout to fit the space I have available.....will start reading about and selecting new track,,after researching on the forum,,etc
Looks like power has gone digital,,,more reading to do on this...
easements
what easement (offset and length) to use with, say, 10-12" radius? (n-scale)

Question of the week: uncoupling ramps?
I'd like to start a new "feature" here on the MRH forum - each week we will post a common "newbie" question and then encourage our subscribers to answer it. This week's question:
"I need help with installing magnetic uncoupling ramps. How do I place them properly? And what's the difference between the ones that go between the tracks, under the tracks, or turn on and off?"
