Getting Started
Building a Model Railroad for under $500
Hello, my name is Justin Miller and I have been a Model Railroader for about 4 years, I have built a 13'X18" shelf layout in my bedroom, but I have been wanting to have a smaller layout with the ability for a continuous run.
I have taken up the challenge to build a complete Layout for under $500, As a college student, this will be about all I could afford for a layout anyway. Here is the track-plan for the layout:

Getting started with $500 MRH contest
MRH will be debuting a contest in the August issue: Getting started in the hobby with $500. What would you do - how far can you get on $500? You don't actually need to spend the money (we won't stop you if you want to), but you need to at least lay out a plausible shopping list and design for what you would build.
More details to follow on this thread and in the August issue of MRH.
Very basic questions
I last modeled in the mid-1960s and I'm just now starting again. Many things have changed, of course, and many are very new and totally unfamiliar. Here are just a few:
Glossary?
Can someone point me to a glossary of railroad terms, (model or prototype)? A lot of the time when reading posts or articles in the magazine, I'm scratching my head, thinking, "What's THAT mean? Also, is there a search function for the forums? I couldn't find one.
Thanks,
Jeff
Track spacing in yards and mainline
Just beginning the design and build of a HO scale railroad layout. Some basic questions I do not see much discussion about.
Need advice on removing stock grab irons
I have an older MDC/Roundhouse Sabine River Railbox and I want to remove the stock "grab irons" (more like small platforms). What is the best method to do so without damaging the exterior posts or gouging out the body? Any advice would help.

A question about Fome-Cor board
I have heard of folks making building flats, backdrops and structure mockups using foam core board. Where do you get yours and what is it faced with? I somehow got my self on the mailing list of U.S. Plastics, and they offer this product called Fome-Cor (item #44121) http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=31148&catid=715
Where to find historical railroad maps?
Good morning, gang -
I'm new to the hobby and new to the forum, but thought you all could help me with a question. I've decided to model my hometown, Rochester, NY, in the 1940's. From the information that I can find, at the time there were 5 or more railroads operating in the area at that time. I can't tackle all of them at once, so would like to find maps of the railroads operating at that time. Any idea where to start? I've looked at Google Earth, but the historical imagery only goes back as far as 1994, and there have been tremendous changes, even since then!
Scale size
Hi All
I want to start to scrathbuild some buildings for my future layout.
just two questions
Hi Guy's
I'm new here and just getting back in Model Railroading and have two questions;
1. Is there some sort of lay-out designing software for Mac?
2. The H0N2 theme's are interesting me more and more. However I was not able yet to find websites/manufactures of this gauge. Any tip would be welcome.
<EDIT> Sorry I goofed up. I meant H0N30. Like in Bob Haydens Carrabasset & Dead River <EDIT>
