Getting Started
Is there any free resources for introducing new hobbyists to Model railroading?
Hi , I am a longtime train fan real and toy/model trains. I have found myself in the posistion of organizing a train club at the local community center. I am seeking out an itroducteray material to inform thoses who are new to the hobby what scale versus gauge means as well as the relative size of the differnt scales compared to each other. Thanks.
NEWBIE

Track design software
Is it me or are the Design Layout softwares hard to use. I have tried a couple of times over the years to use Atlas Software (free) to try and design my layout on the computer to see what it will look like. I have struggled with the whole thing, from trying to have "Benchwork" design saved.... to creating my design on the page. Just not into Cad program I guess.
I have read some of the Manual ( 227 pages! ) but isn't there anything easier?
I have my idea on paper and want to get on with building but am wanting to see if all my idea will fit .
What would you tell newcomers to the hobby?
Do you have or know of a FAQ for getting started in model railroading? I'm wondering about things like:
- What are the ten essential books to get?
- Ten parts/structures/suppliers catalogs to order? (Advertisers to MRH are fine. I imagine they are all good)
- What happened to Athearn? I have 10-20 of their rolling stock. Can you suggest a substitute?
Help!
I am abeginner to the hobby. I need help trying to build an HO layout in a 9X10 room. I wold like it to be freelance and have the ability to operate more than one train at a time. I have built and tore down 4 tables thus far and can't seem to get the trains to operate properly. Can anyone help with a simple good layout?
Thanks,
Dave
Want to get help from fellow N gauge modelers and living in Orange County California?
Hi,
I live in Orange County California and I am trying to start having monthly face to face meetings for N gauge modelers to get together and help each other with their home layouts.
If your interested in getting help or helping others with their layouts, please join the Meetup group that I have started.

Craftsman Kits ?
Maybe it's been asked before but, what designates a kit as a "craftsman kit"? I know that they're usually made of wood, highly detailed, more challenging to assemble and more expensive. Is there more to it than that? How come they're usually limited to a certain number (like a run of 500)? What's a good craftsman kit to start with if you've never built one?

J&L Railway - 1st Trackplan
Hi all again,
Here is the latest attempt at our trackplan for the J&L Railway. This is the lower deck of our twin deck layout, I have posted all information in the "Getting started in Aus" thread on the second page Some very note worthy information...I couldn't figure out how to attach another file to my reply.
