Getting Started

About Time!

I want to give a shout out to you guys.  I finally have the ability to start my railroad after wanting one for the past 40 years or so, and I read a lot of your advice in making my track plan, benchwork plans, scale choice, etc etc etc as I did my research over the past 2 weeks.  Now the wood is bought, (and in the basement), new lights are hung in what will be the train room.  (11x20 space that I will leave 2 feet on each wall).  due to the low ceiling (6 feet with a 5 foot steel beam to duck under) I'll be going single deck for this layout.

BAck in the hobby after a long time away.

I was out of the hobby for about 20 years. One of the main motivations to get back in is DCC and sound. On a previous layout, I had valance lighting, painted backdrops, and acceptable scenery. Sound is what was missing and what was available back then was a good start but not really in my price range. I was a fan of the Onboard System but 600 to get started was too much back then.

New to Model Railroading

I am just getting started on my first 4x8 layout. After a couple of weeks of playing with different track layouts I think I have finally decided on my layout. I am trying to take everything one step at a time and plan everything before moving to putting it in place. I have done lots of online research but I can not find help on elevating track. I know I want to elevate a section of track about 6 inches from the base to have it run over a mountain scene (with a track running under through a tunnel)

Hello from a Newbie in China

Happy new year !. I am a 47 years old guy from China. I bought my first loco 3 months ago, since then, I cannot help thinking about building a layout. Now, I've set up a table 1.6m x 1.05m  (around 5.2 x 3.4 ft) as the base and start to think about what to be put in this layout. The track plan is based on one of Noch's intergrated layouts with some small changes. Besides the rail tracks, I also want to add a small Faller car system. To a newbie like me, the task is not easy and there will be a lot of questions come up.

15" curves in a HO layout

I'm getting back into the hobby after 20 years. Things seem to have changed since then. Can someone  lead me to a link explaining what DCC is and how to use it?

I like the HO scale however I'll be limited to a 3 1/2 X 7 foot layout. I'll be operating small locomotives and cars (1920 - 1930's). I have a Rivarossi 0-4-0 switcher from way back then and would like to add either a 2-6-0, a 2-6-2, or a 4-6-2 to my layout.. My question is: Can I use 15' radius curves with the 6 driver locomotives?

Thanks. Jim B.

Resuming the hobby...

Hi All,

After being on a hiatus for the past couple of years, I'm looking to resume where I left off.  The reason for putting a hold on the hobby is due to my being laid off, and with the hobby being as expensive as it is, I just didn't have the budget.  However, I'm glad to say that I've been working now for the past year or so, and I've come to a point where I'd like to resume where I left off.

Track Design Software

Hello All,

First post for me, and I am seeking a bit of design advice. Which track layout software does everyone use and why? I work on a PC platform, could use MAC if required. From looking at everyone's layout, they have modeled in several different programs. I have found a few, some are a bit more daunting than others.

My dilemma

I work for Uncle Sam and to move up the food chain in my agency, you have to move around the country and in my case it averages every 5 years.  This year I moved into a house with a space that I think would make a very nice train room.  It is the bonus room above the garage and one wall is 22 feet and the other is 27 with about 13 feet between the walls.   There are a few things in room like a window, a closet, the desk I am writing this from, a small bed, a coffee table we are not using and boxes of trains.

HO track that connects to power

I have an old HO set I want to put up.  I am new to this and am missing the piece of track that connects to the power supply. I have attached a photo of the connector.  Where can I buy the track that will connect?

Rail Joiners

I'm a newbie and don't understand the use of plastic rail joiners.  I don't understand the need to stop the flow of current through the track.  What am I missing?  Thanks.
