Operation and maintenance

Show your train order signals!

Show your modeled train order signals!

I was interested in modeling a horizontal color light signal as seen below, possibly using a Tomar TO Signal as a starting point. Can you post your modeled TO signals, semaphore, light, or other? Also ideas for lighting, control, and fascia panels would be appreciated. I am looking for ideas and inspiration.

Masonite Track Cleaning Car

Here's my most recent "procrastination" project... a masonite track cleaning car. I decided it should blend in with the other rolling stock, but chose a "tongue-in-cheek" road name :)

Research showed that Highball sells Masonite decals, but they are for a Thrall All-Door boxcar... tried to make them work, but it is really too new and too big, plus they are just too large to fit on a smaller car, so - I ended up making my own with a similar format, except for the data blocks from Microscale.

"battleship" mobile layout construction staging

Well, we've got the branchline track laid, and the central division yard is next.  Once the trackwork is operational, we'll be in a position to actually "operate".  To support that, I plan to build two moveable staging yards, HMS North and South, one for "north sub" and one for "south sub".  The north sub must contain four trains, while the south will need tracks for six.  With these modules installed, we'll be able to operate all the anticipated trains, and get a feel for operation of the division yard.

5 Minute Enhancements

What are the quick things you can do to improve your layout or the layout room?

Bachmann 4-6-0 Sound Value Locomotive Won't Run

I have an HO Bachmann 2-6-0 Sound Value DCC locomotive that is about 3 months old.  I use Digitrax Chief and JMRI to program and run my layout.  I successfully programmed this locomotive to address 377 adjusted the sounds and speed table to my liking, and ran the locomotive for about 2 months.

Lack of yard lead tracks

One of the things that I notice on even the largest layouts is the lack of yard lead tracks in their yards.  I consistently see large yard ladders with no apparent way to actually work them.  What I mean is a way to actually disassemble or assemble trains.   A yard ladder without a lead track to me looks like a place to simply park trains.

Here is where I got the most useful info on designing a functioning classification yard.

Challenge to all serious model railroaders!

At one club's last Ops Session I was really impressed by a long passenger train that actually had a lot of passengers, so now I am issuing a challenge to all serious modellers: Wouldn't it be great if every lead unit in a consist, every lone loco on the point, and every caboose on the tail had crew members? Let's get that idea rolling, starting with me! John Colley, Sonoma, CA

Loksound full throttle automatic notching issue...update-disregard

I'm in need of some help. I just updated my select direct alco 244 sound files to the new full throttle. The new sounds and the controls are amazing but I have one thing that's bugging me and I can't find an answer no matter how much I search. With my old setup, when I turned my dt402 throttle to step 1 the engine would throttle up to notch 1. Notch 2 would come in somewhere around step 11 and so on. Now with the full throttle settings the engine doesn't go to notch 1 until step 7 on the dt402. Notch 2 doesn't come in until step 14 or so.

More Track Cleaning

Somewhere I ran across the idea of using dry graphite to keep track clean.

I should let you know that I was operating DCC on an On30 layout.  Prior to converting to DCC I cleaned track every few months.  But DCC is fussy about clean track.  After converting to DCC I was cleaning track before every operating session and still got some hesitations and stalls.

I acquired some artists graphite from the local variety store and gave it a try.
