Loads to and from a match factory?
Looking to add an industry, and recently thought of a match factory. Seems like there could be a good variety of shipments. Anyone know what would be shipped in abd out of a match factory? Uh, already figured matches would be going out...

RR's and Hurricanes
Since we have an impending hurricane, I thought it might be interesting to tell the MRH readers what real railrods are doing because of the hurricane.
The railroads have been watching the storm since it entered the Gulf. Once it strengthed to where it looked like a hazard (about two or three days ago, they would begin making plans.
Every ballast car in the region (maybe the system) would be loaded and sent to staging areas about 100-200 miles inland. Carloads of ties (for cribbing) and bridge material would also be inventoried and possible pre-positioned.

Any experience with smoke units making track dirty?
Anyone on here have experience running smoke units on their layout? Does the track get dirty faster? I would think yes, but it would be nice to find someone with actual experience to confirm this suspicion.

Computer Assisted Operations - How Far
I have been reading a lot of wonderful articles on Computer Assisted Operation such as JMRI and others. I am planning my layout to work with signals and have crossed over to the " dark side " of operations. My questions are:
How do you incorporate computer assisted operations into your sessions?
To what extent have you incorporated computer assistance ( if any ) ?
What are some reasons you did or didn't use computer assisted operations?
3 point bearing on trucks
Hi,
My name is Michael and I live in Germany.
There is a company that does thin etched brass shims, which go between the bolsters and the trucks of a car. These shims have ridges to effect a 3 point bearing. Orientated lengthwise or crosswise to the car, they allow the trucks to swivel in the respective direction.
I forgot the name of this company. Can anybody help, please?
Regards
Michael
Operations outside the box
I have been considering what it may take to have remote operating sessions. To illustrate what I mean here is an example. My layout will have rail barge service that operates out of Prince Rupert BC, sending and receiving cars from other places along the pacific coast that also have rail barge service like Whittier Alaska, Vancouver or where ever.
Holding on a hill.
I model the C&O and as such Flat ground was rare on the prototype. While the area I model (the New River Gorge) was flatter then other area it still had a bit of a grade. And while I flattened out major switching areas I do have a few Coal tipples and such where the train being switch will have to sit at least partly on an incline. Part of this is due to geometry. One of my tipples had a track going up from the main to the tipple and back down to the main. So part of the train will be on an incline.
Track Cleaning - Iron
I thought I would add a car to my track cleaning MOW train. Currently the train has 3 cars with fine emery pads that polish the rail and a trailing car that has a felt pad to wipe off any grit and/or dust. The new car would pull in anything metal that may be hiding in the ties. I simply glued a steel weigh to an old car frame then just stuck some of those “Rare Earth” magnets on the underside.
AHM Diesel locomotive repair
Hello everyone,
I'm back again with another locomotive. This time it is an AHM diesel locomotive. The road name is Chicago and Eastern Illinois. Blue and orange. I know that these were not the best locos, and it may not be worth it, but i would like to try to get it to run again. When powered, there is no response. already checked track and all that, the issue is with the loco. there is a loose wire under the shell, i don't know where it goes. i will post pictures later. Any help is appreciated.

Modern BNSF operations paperwork (switchlists, manifests, etc)
Hi all,
I'm looking for examples of modern BNSF operations paperwork, such as switch lists, manifests, their version of a Form D, etc.
I'm using the JMRI Operations software and would like to format my paperwork in a similar way to the prototype. I would also like to find out the paperwork involved if a local crew wants to switch a facility that requires occupying part of a main track (if that situation still exists) or if a maintenance of way team needs to occupy a section of track.
