Rebooting my N Scale Layout - Design Q1 - To Helix or Not To Helix

I had a N Scale layout I've been working on for years, it is gone.  But the time came to reconfigure the space and have gone from a rolling table design to an around the wall design.

So now back to the "Dream and Design" stage.

Downsizing My Empire: How I Shrank from a Midsize to a Small Switching Layout in the Same Basement

This is a forum post showing how I went about reducing the size of my HO scale model railroad layout. The process took a little over a year, required a lot of thought and planning, and now I feel that I am at the right size that matches my lifestyle. At the same time, I decided to adjust my model railroad prototype while keeping the central theme. I’ll explain everything that went into this and show what the layout looks now. I hope this post shows that you don’t need a large layout for your dream layout and that small layouts can be fun to build and operate as well.

Helix - clockwise vs. anti-clockwise?

Is there some kind of a standard for choosing it?

I tried looking for more details on the web but nothing meaningful comes up. Sure, there are plenty of photos of helices, but that does not tell me their background story.

Which direction should be chosen and how is that direction decided upon (is it based on the direction trains come from or go to; whether trains change direction, or not inside the helix; some other parameter, etc)?

Seeking Layout Advice from wiser souls.

Here is a layout plan I hope to start building soon, but I have some questions I'd like to ask as to the construction, as well as suggestions on the plan itself. I'll ask these in a separate post.

Sound Along The LP&T (Part 2)

In Part 1 I described the last scene we worked on, the little railroad town of Coaldale.  Seemed fitting to share the last thing first, but now I'd like to go back to the beginning and share how things evolved.  In this part I'll describe how it all got started, and the very first sound Kermit and I created together along The LP&T.

The Beginnings...

Anybody want realistic timetables and/or track plans?

Hello. I don't have the space or resources right now to build my own layout the way I want it, with lots and lots of operating realism. I'm more of an armchair modeler at this point, but I really enjoy planning layouts and reading + making timetables. So if anybody wants, just respond and I'll draft you a track plan based on what you say (A diagram of your space would be helpful) and I'll get something back to you.

Shelf layout help

Hello all,

I'm looking to build a DCC switching shelf layout 24" wide by 9' long. I want the two primary industries to be a bakery, which will see tankers, covered hoppers and boxcars along with a scrap yard the will only see gondolas. There will be a few miscellaneous industries in between them both. I envision the bakery on one end and scrap yard on the other.

I'm looking for ideas and suggestions for a rather simple track plan, I do not have to utilize the full 9 feet.

Layout Room Entrance, Swing-Down Bridge(s), 3 of them in combo

I'm building a double deck layout in its own handi-house shed  It has a large wide door at the entrance that needs a couple of 'entrance bridges' that can be moved aside relatively quickly. Because of the large width of the opening I am thinking it should be a 'split bridge' type like the bascule type where both of the two sides would swing up.

What is the metal used in Atlas locomotive weights?

I don’t have access to a spectrometer any more and wondered what the material is.  Is it a pure metal, zinc comes to mind or an alloy?

Thanks.

Passenger service teminal question

Have a 22' x 12' room that I am going to run a double main line around the room mostly for N Scale passenger car sets.

Rite now I have the Kato California Zephyr and The Daylight passenger cars set.  Expect I will add a Sante Fe passenger set at some point.

Not going to do any switching or really any other sidings other than a passenger terminal.    Just want to watch these wonderful passenger cars go around the room.  I have an 0n30 layout below this so that satisfies any switching itch.
