Y Junction Track Plans
Hi everyone,
I am considering more and more the possibility of a medium sized layout in the future that functions as follows.
A stub ended yard on one end of the layout followed by a Y junction with a branch line splitting off of the main line. Each would be point to point operationally with two small staging yards or a common staging yard on the opposite end. The main could be continuous run though.
KC&G: West Bottoms District
I'm a gonna dood it, I am. Some say I'm plum crazy... 'an you'll get no argument from me about that!
But here goes...
This thread's gonna' do some mullin', musin', n' plannin', about my upcoming Kansas City & Gulf's "West Bottoms District". The particulars are:
* HO scale.

Recommended spacing for even lighting using 2x2 flat panel LED lights
I am nearing ready to paint the basement walls so once that is done, drop ceiling and light installation comes next.
I am planning on using 2x2 flat panel LED 4k temp lights in the drop ceiling. However, I am unsure as to how many will be needed and what is a good spacing to provide even lighting for the layout.
The attached scale drawing shows the room, ceiling beams which run across in 3 places and approximate proposed 2x2 light locations.

Cardigan Jct-New Brighton Soo Line FreemoN,, continuation???
Howdy to all.
It has been awhile for any work on the layout,, I have been dabbling with ESU lok sound and my Proto Throttle,, which is too cool!! But I digress.
I am wanting to add more switching to my layout,, put stay prototypical at the same time. The industries would be prototypical for the late 70's thru early 80's. I am wanting to have a continuous running also. At home the layout would not be put together in a prototype fashion,, but at shows prototype fidelity would be a priority.
Staging Yard Ideas
I’ve been struggling with fitting staging and a return loop in a small area so thought I’d throw this out for everyone’s comments or ideas.
What have you done? What would you do?

Below I am exhibiting my track plan for a possible switching layout.
ISL to roundy-round and space constraints
I have built a N scale industrial switching layout on a shelf in my office and used most of the available space to do it. Now I want to be able to just let the train run...
The layout is currently 9' x 11" and the available space is 12' x 24" although extending out to the full 24" for the entire layout would probably cramp my desk to much. The shelves that I am using to support it are 16" deep. Here is an early photo of the space.
Switching layout track standards - overkill or good?
I’d like to do a sanity check on track standards for the present day era HO scale switching layout I’m planning. I want the layout to “run like a dream”, so I’ve been reading Joe Fugate’s “Trackwork” volume in the “Make it run like a Dream” series. I’ll be running some long cars (73’ centerbeams), and some short cars (2 bay hoppers, corn syrup tanks), and some in between. The key point there is all equipment is most definitely NOT of similar length.
