History of the Screwdriver

We all use screwdrivers in our hobby (and other work). I thought this history of the screwdriver was quite fascinating, .....and might be so for other modelers.

Makeshift turntable for Stonehammer's staging area.

I made this makeshift turntable to turn around my passenger car and hopefully a loco if I can figure a way to wire it. Any ideas out there until I buy or make a better one?

I glued a piece of lower profile track to styrene so it would be the same height of the rail on the spurs.

In the details

Looking at my project and I know without a doubt I am missing one or more items that will come back and bite me.

Can anyone list some things that were missed in their layout planning/design that would fit this particular bill?

I have tried to  make a check  list but again something tells me I am missing one or  more thnigs that are important that if not included..will cost time, money and most importantly my sanity...

N-Scale Layout plans for review please

Sorry for the long post...  After having spent a good deal of time reading through track plan reviews, I tried to answer as many questions as I could think of up front :)

Below is the track plan I have designed in 3rd Planit for review, thoughs, and opinions please.  Along with a lengthy description of notes I have put down for both myself and this post.

Where is your layout located?

I need to make a decision between moving to a much smaller room (9.5x11.5) in the basement, or moving to my shop (35x60) and building a layout there. I would construct a room in my shop (16x32) and finish with heat/ac and normal finishes, carpet etc.

One drawback to the bigger layout is that the shop is about 150' from the house, granted it has a  paved driveway to it, but its farther away. Also there is no plumbing in the shop (for now) maybe a later date??

What could I fit in this space?

I recently looked at a property I could buy, and got some approximate measurements of the space I could use for a layout. It's actually the living room and dining room, but I'm single and there would be an extra bedroom I could furnish as a TV "living" room (got my priorities, see), so I could use all the space shown except for the part where I airbrushed a path between the door and rest of the place.

Basement prep

I will be closing on my new house this coming week and I am in the very early planning stages of building a layout in the roughly 1500 sq ft basement. One thing I want to do before any benchwork is started is finish the basement. I have some ideas in mind, but I also want to learn from others - both dos and don'ts. This will be my 8th layout, but the first in a dedicated space, and the first large one. I plan on being here for the long term, so I want to get it right to start with, or as best I can.

Determining what you want

Hello all,

Need help calculating run-around length

I’m reworking an old track plan, part of which I utilize a run-around.  Unfortunately, space is tight and inches count.

I wound like to run-around 58 inches which should allow for 6 cars and a few extra inches.  I will use #6 turnouts with track spacing of 2 inches.

How to Compress a Yard

I recently moved to a new house and while I wait to take out some walls to fit my current layout I've been dreaming about my retirement railroad.

The prototype I eventually hope to model is the CN Kingston Subdivision. It's a double track mainline with two yards along the line, that while relatively small by railroad standards, are large by model standards if every track is included.
