Designing for long freight cars

I was thinking about the comparison between transition era and modern day freight cars and how the length of 70'+ freight cars affects design.

Aside from the operational criteria of minimum curve radii and turnout number, how else do you or would you design for longer freight cars?  Incorporate less curves on the layout? Change the compression rate of industries?  Reduce the amount of trackwork per linear ft of railroad?  What else?

Need layout design input...

Would like some feedback on a 4'x10' island type layout I come in possession of a lot of Kato unitrack so I will utilize that. I would have liked to built around the walls layout but could not. My 9 year old son will be helping so using kato unitrack will be good.. but will later be weathered and ballasting. We will have some small operating sessions with basic train movements (just introduction for him) anyway here goes..

Building my son his first HO model train Module

Hi everyone,

My son has been recently hounding me for his own little layout...He came to me after secretly researching themes, layouts and scenes for his own design...Apparently there was a small amount of window shopping then the attempt to try to pry some coin out of me.

Well that was as successful for his as getting blood out of a stone...but on the flip side I collected off cuts of ply from a recent shelving contract. an brought them home and stock piled some materials and fixings to get what we needed...

Continuous or not?

I am about to launch Phase II of my layout construction. My layout will model the W&N Branch or the P&R Railroad from Wilmington , DE to Birdsboro, PA (near Reading, PA) in 1900-1905.  I have built the southern half from Wilmington to Coatesville, now its time to start the Northern half, Coatesville to Birdsboro.

Very Unique Waterfront Switching Layout

I have been fascinated with this fellows work on a pier terminal building. And all the while as I read thru his numerous postings and great photos, I assumed he was  building it to add into a bigger layout. But today I just discovered he was actually building a stand alone switching layout.

Modern HO Scale Indiana Harbor Belt/NS Layout

Hi all, here’s my HO Scale trackplan I’ve recently started building.

It is 10’x12’ with 22” minimum radius curves and based on the Indiana Harbor Belt in Chicago. I’m trying to work out the staging yard/operations to maximize realistic operations as best I can.
