Cell Phone Stand

Someone posted about making a cell phone support, a while back, and the idea stuck in my mind.  Yesterday, I decided to make one for taking pictures and videos on the layout.

I started with a scrap piece of plywood about 2.5 inches wide and slightly longer than my phone.  I ran down to my local ACE Hardware and picked up a 1/4 inch dowel and a 1/4X20 t-nut (total cost $2.00).  I cut 4-inch sections of dowel to support the phone.

Overweighting 100-ton hoppers

I thought I'd share my way of adding weight to my Bowser 100-ton 3 bay hoppers. Details in the next post.

N scale coupler...is there a standard?

As an HO modeler,it’s fairly common knowledge that Kadee is the coupler of choice by the vast majority. I am aware there are other options, but Kadee is the 800 lb gorilla in the room. Not being very familiar with N scale, especially from an operating view point,I am curious if there is a coupler that is the hands down favorite? One that modelers chose to replace the one that comes with RTR equipment? I’m also curious about the pros and cons if there is more than one? I know Athearn uses the old McHenry couplers as their standard.

Weekly photo fun 10/22/18-10/29/18

It's that time again. I got these awhile back I ordered from Athearn. I'm going to weather & graffiti the cars in the future. Now; let's see those photos/videos for the week!

Carolina Central Moves to HOn30 Maine

Been in and out of HOn30 since the early 1970s. Was N-Scaling and got a good deal on the Kato Carolina Central layout about four years ago. Sure looked like HOn30 with the track spacing. Bought some Minitrains and Shapeway HOn30 cars but health problems caused me to shelve model railroading.

Interesting Paint / Primer discussion

A gentleman with a lot of experience in painting models is building a lifting bridge, and painting it via airbrush.

I thought some of his observations about the painting of the plastic model were quite interesting.

Getting glue off of styrene

I was given a sheet of styrene (.080) about 4' x6'. This is a great score but.....it has had some sort of contact cement applied to one side. I find that rubbing with my fingers removes the glue but this would be incredibly time consuming to clean up using only fingers. I tried a corner with spraying WD-40 (recommended by a friend) which work fairly well at removing the glue but left a funky film on the styrene. Does anyone have a recommendation on how I might remove this glue?

Whole layout paint scheme : modelling "Kodachrome"?

Dear MRHers,

Was musing to myself about the history of proto RR photography, and the early colour-photo era. The use of "Kodachrome" film brought a very definite colour reproduction and impression to many railfans, and by-extension to modellers.

Knowing as we do that Kodachrome had a distinct "look" (whether that was accurate when compared to a Mk1 eyeball of a human standing trackside is an acknowledged variable),

Roundhouse auxiliary storage tracks ground

I have recently installed a nine stall roundhouse and turntable with five auxiliary tracks.  I'm using cinders for ballast in the yard/roundhouse area. I was wondering what material to use between the rails (ballast?) and at the far end from the turntable (concrete?), and the area between tracks. Any Ideas?
