Modeling general discussion

Using google earth images to create a backdrop

Has anyone attempted to use a google earth image as a photo backdrop?  Success?  Anywhere on line to find a how to?

Hello Twin Cities!

I'm in St. Paul for about ten days and would love to see any model railroading that might be available. I'm reasonably well mannered, good around children and pets and house trained.

just checkin' in to see what's happening around these parts.

Bucket list of things i want to model.

Over the years of standing along railroad tracks, I have a list in my head of things I want to model. In no particular order

Conrail 8907 SW7 This was the switcher that worked my hometown of North Tonawanda for years, and I always had a yen for a decent model of it.

Just a For What It's Worth

A number of years ago the Yellowstone MRR club in Billings, MT went out of existence. The new MRR club in Billings is called the Rimrock Model Railroaders. They have a Facebook page under that name. The group has acquired a building to build a layout and have been fiendishly building benchwork and laying track. The building is downtown near the old NP station / depot.

When is it a good idea to walk away.

When does a healthy hobby become a bad habit?

Years of frustration, dollars spent, and time lost may be an indication that the ideas and thoughts in one’s mind cannot sensibly be put to fruition, and might actually be harmful.

Best TYCO layout I have ever seen

I'm not really into this kinda of thing, but I can certainly appreciate the modeling this guy has done. I had a bunch of this US-1 Trucking as a kid and recently opened the old storage box only to find that it fell victim to my youth. There were lots of broken, or missing pieces. Oh well... it has been packed away for 30 years and moved countless times. I finally decided I would try and sell it, but I'm not sure much of it is worth anything at all. I just thought it was neat what could be done.

Servo control of turnouts

Short story long but I'm Looking for guidance. I have a small HO switching layout. Just the track so far and beginning the scenery rough in. All the track and turnouts are handlaid and I currently have fast tracks bullfrogs for turnout control and powering frogs. I'm thinking I want to add remote control of turnouts with servos. Small layout so I only have 7 turnouts. I see that a tam valley octopus will do 8 so no issue there. I would be using panel mounted dpdt toggles for control, one side to servo other side for led panel indicators.

On30 Track & Turnouts

I have a 2' x 6' module to start which I can modify to 30" x6' and want to try my hand at On30.  What track & turnouts are best for this I will be  using an  modified 90' turntable for turn around.  I have made fast tracks in the past on HO and used magnets for ease of routing with ME flextrack.  I think PECO is another alternative, which do you prefer ? It will be a simple track plan on this module. No track plan at this time. Thanks for any advise, Zeke

Kapton tape and Solder

I needed these and found expensive sources either with online Train store or via supply houses with large quantities.

So using Amazon prime, I found both in single user quantities at one third the price, with free shipping in two days.

So you never know what you find shopping around.

Now comes the hard part of trying to solder onto decoder tabs.

So today, I stopped by Reed's Hobby's in La Mesa... the last Model Train shop in San Diego... I've spoken of the shop before... how much I love it... and outside of the shop is a big "For Sale" sign.

It would appear the owner is selling the shop, and the building. They said they have gotten a lot of interest in the building, but none in the shop.

The shop turns a profit, according to the employees (and this is WITHOUT doing any online sells) but the owner wants to retire.
