SW1200 engine fine-tuned with Lokprogrammer and ProtoThrottle

I finally got my main engine, an SW1200, fully set up for realistic operation using ESU's Lokprogrammer and the ProtoThrottle.

I'm not sure of my total top speed, but I think I've got it topped out around 25 scale mph by compressing the engine's speed curve. I'm sharing some Lokprogrammer screen captures below in case anyone's interested.

I want to do a "Jim Six" on this kit.

I'm determined to weather this kit to look like the superb job Jim Six has done on Accurail kits.

Simulating spray polyurethane

I'm in the planning stages of modeling a small building that was covered in spray polyurethane, used as insulation. It adds thickness to everything and things like windows and doors are "sunk-in". It has some texture but not as much as stucco. Being somewhat smooth in texture but somewhat bumpy overall. Think of a frosted cake; you might have smoothed it but the frosting could be thicker in one part and thinner in another.

The future of 3d printing, a full color 3d printer..

Was browsing around and saw something pretty impressive a full color 3d printer with a new relatively affordable version coming out in december for $999. Looking at the videos this actually is a pretty dang good printer with the much larger one for 3,500 It uses ink to actually print a layer at and time and more info can be found here: https://www.xyzprinting.com/en-US/product/da-vinci-color-mini

duplicating parts/models

Due my last move, I've been a few years without a layout and I'm always thinking of little modeling projects to keep me entertained in the meantime. I've bought a few kits that I can build that will be useful on a future layout I have planned, one of the kits is discontinued and has some broken parts. Its  almost impossible to find new parts for as well. So one thing that I have considered is molding and making new parts after I saw a resin molding kit for sale. Any advice if I was going to attempt anything like this?

Fall Cleaning

Well it’s September already, I woke up to a cold rainy day, so it is down to the basement to get the layout running for the winter.

First step is to vacuum the track and layout.

Rail joiner installation tool

Hi Guys:

Having just slit my finger open installing track joiners, I am not looking for a tool to install the little things.  I thought I saw one one time that was 3 way, held the joiner and gave you a surface to push on, but dont know where I found it

Thanks for the help

Weekly Photo Fun Sept 2nd to 8th

I was running at my train club (The Slim Gauge Guild) and thought I would share a pic of my passenger train. A Division Point K-28 pulling some Blackstone coaches.

A new “Golden Age” for kits and scratch building

Following the norm for new technology, the price of 3D printers keeps dropping.  In fact, desktop models are available for under $2,000.00 although their output quality is still pretty rudimentary.

However, also the norm for technology, the quality of output will continue to improve as prices continue to come down.

So, with 3D printing technology, do you think we could be looking at a return to a new “golden age” of kits and scratch built models with parts made at home?

There's always something fun to do.

I think one of the things I love about this hobby... especially the way i chose to enjoy this hobby, is that there is always something to do.

Take this month for instance.

This month, I'm getting hit with some unexpected bills... plus my keyboard and mouse need to be replaced... and on top of that, my roommate is $300 short on rent, so I have to make that up 9and it might be a month or two before he can get me back)

So I don't have any money to spend on trains this month.
