Modeling general discussion

Staying motivated in the hobby

I'm just curious how others stay motivated with the hobby. For me sometimes it difficult due to pressures of everyday life...work, family, remodeling, animals (wife's horses actually). So to stay motivated I have:

-Made my layout room inviting...paint, lighting and good flooring. This is the first layout I have had in a finished space and I can tell you....it makes a huge difference.

Sound files for different locos

Where can I find the different sound files for a loco?

CTI Electronics TrainBrain can play sound files and I would like to get sound files (.wav or .mp3) for different functions (say whistle, horn, etc.)

Also, is there a way to get these files from .vsd files (virtual sound decoder)?

Visit to NAPM layout at Trainfest

This past Trainfest I had the opportunity to visit the North American Prototype Modelers layout.

The layout is a club with a large membership. The quality of the modeling is simply amazing, and the level of detail and cohesiveness between scenes is astounding considering this is a club. The layout room was immaculately clean. Just all around an unbelievably well-done layout. Kudos to NAPM!

I took photos and would like to share some of their amazing work. In the next two posts, I'll share 28 different images. Enjoy!

need help, BRW RS1

Had a bit of an impulse buy at the weekend(like Alcos, like livery), Atlas HO RS1 BRW 211, but can't seem to find a photo of the prototype, is this a fictitious livery.

Suggested pixels/inch for custom decals?

Does anyone have a recommended pixels per inch count for doing custom decals? I'm currently set at 2500 px/inch. Haven't printed yet, and want to know if I'm way over-shooting it with that number or not.

For further reference, current plan is for HO scale decals. I'd take any other suggestions that come to mind as well. Not necessarily planning to print them myself.

Signals on a small/medium railroad: how to handle single track to mainline/siding?

I'm building a small/medium sized railroad, loosely modeled after the Southern Railway's Murphy Branch. To my knowledge the Murphy Branch never had signals, but this one will. :) I'm modeling three towns in about 13x30, HO. To give you an idea of the amount of traffic, in 1937 the Murphy Branch had 8 trains total on the timetable per day.

New Workshop Ideas & Suggestions wanted

So my wife and I recently purchased a new home, and with this new house comes a new opportunity to redo a work bench for modeling. I model in large scale (1/29) so things take up a bunch of space, so I want to make this new work bench useful.

What are some must haves that I'm missing? I do a lot of scratch building and Kit bashing.

Here's what I can think of.
1. Outlets. The more the better. I'm thinking of adding a dedicated 30 amp fuse just for workshop stuff.
2. Room to place power tools (mini table as, drill press etc).
3 paint storage racks

3D Print HO (1/87) Scale

3D Print, Printrbot Play.  Files from Thingiverse.com. Sorry, can’t seem to figure out how to turn the photo right side up, framed correctly, or even how to cancel the post.  MRH: We fixed it for you ...

Trainfest new Products :-)

Tangent has a new PS 4427 High Side Covered Hopper out. HO scale,

Same car as Proto did 20 years ago, but with the full Tangent treatment.

Scaletrains is to announce something later today.

Also a new company called Value Trains is announcing something.

Probably a few more items I do not know about.

TMTV and RE (TrainMasters TV + Running Extra deal)

MRH RE finally gave me a reason to subscribe to TMTV with the package deal. I love the RE stuff, but I am really liking the TMTV. I wish I would have signed up 2 years ago when I first started thinking about it. It is great....high quality stuff. If your not subscribed to RE or TMTV I would highly recommend them both, well worth the investment! Thanks Joe F. and all of your great staff for great products....I am impressed.
