Experimenting with Stonework

Experimenting with colours and washes to create the look of limestone and fieldstone walls. Read the techniques I used to get this finish.

Tomalco craftsman kit sealant.

The question is how to seal all the the wood parts to prevent warping. Resins are too hard to sand and they obscure the wood look and feel. Water based glues allow warping right away. Whatever sealant you use may react with the finish paint you use. These questions go on and on and on. Feel free to augment or change the title to correctly ask this question. My ultimate goal is to be able to use a combination of paints, powders and pan pastels after assembling the kit using any combination of adhesives to do the assembly.

Señor plow

Señor plow test fitted

I recently built a trio of lightweight CN GP9.  One notable (at least to me) missing item was the plow between the footboards on the CN GP9 fleet.  As the models come from Athearn and Proto 2000 they lack this feature, although Athearn has apparently remedied this on later models.

Upper level access to model buildings

While building a row of store front buildings for a small downtown scene on my layout, I noticed none of the two and three story buildings I chose had any visible means of access to the upper floors on the front of the building. Normally there would be an entry way door to one side or the other of the first floor business, but none of the buildings I have built have one. I have six different building models, not one has a door for upper floor access.  My buildings are all kits from either Woodland Scenic’s/DPM or Walthers Cornerstone.

Need some help with decoder and LED

In the middle of putting a Loksound micro into a Bachman tank loco and i need some advise on installing LED's for headlights.  I have mini LED's that are listed as Forward current of 15/20 ma and voltage of 2.8 - 3.4V.  Attaching these to the Loksound mini what size resistor should i attach.  Does it go to the Cathode or anode side and does cathode or anode go to the blue wire ground on the Micro decoder.

Thank you all for your help

Grain Elevator Clearance Question

Good morning,

I have a question about clearance from the wall(s) of two buildings to the rail on the siding.

These HO scale buildings are getting lights and final placement on the layout today, hopefully, and I'm wavering on exact placement. Google search has offered up no dimensions.

We're set in 1973, the locos are GP-7 or U-23-B. Grain is in covered hoppers or a couple of old boxcars.

Shinnohara Switches

Have "inherited" a number of #6 Shinnohara switches from a dismantled layout. The will be cut in to my mainline where I have #4's to give me a smoother transition to my yards. These switches are in great shape but have a drop wire that has me stumped. It is connected to the outside of the frog guard rail on the diverging track. Have no idea why or what it would attach to. See photos attached.

Also, are these switches dcc friendly or do I have to have insulated joiners on the two inside rails like I do with my yard tracks? Thanks for your help.

Ditch Lights

Picked up a Scale Trains Operator w/DC only. Installed a TCS-T1 decoder in it that I had laying around.  Put it in a consist in the lead for the lighting effects with a sound unit trailing. Headlight is nice and bright, but can't get the ditch lights to work.

I am thinking maybe remove the wiring from the board going to the ditch lights and attach to new decoder. T1 says it's a two function. Does that mean the green & purple wires are of no use?

JOUEF TURNTABLE

Hello everybody,

My name is Jacques from Mauritius, I have this JOUEF turntable(see picture) and I want to make it work using an ARDUINO and a stepper motor. For your info I have the arduino and one 5 wire stepper motor which I got from an old FAX machine. What I want to do is very simple, I have 6 sheds for 6 loco, I want to use a 6 positions rotary switch, so that I can move the bridge to the 6 positions foreward and backwards.

More Weathering of the Terrain...

Working on some more weathering today, added several more diluted washes of black to the ready rocks on the northern bank, then added another layer of zip texturing d
