Toma

After giving my layout a lot of thought, (in my job I have ample time to over-think anything) I have decided that the best thing to do will be toma. I have also decided that I will model in N scale using ntrak standards. I have therefore thrown out the idea of using the plan I was considering and instead just letting the layout grow. One of the biggest problems I was having was narrowing down what to model. I decided that with ntrak modules I can simply  build a module of whatever I have the fancy to model at the time.

What is this?

While searching on Google Maps the Colton, CA yard, I discovered what seems to be a UP car. What is this car?  Are those solar panels on the roof? What is that cupola for?

Masking tips for painting around rivets

I've been trying to get into painting my locomotives and rolling stock, but I've been having problems with rivets and details. No matter how tightly I try to apply masking tape, I always get pooled paint afterwards. Do you guys have any tips to share?

Thanks!

Chimney vent

I am working on a Model of the QN cabin at Quinnimont WV on the C&O. The kit is an old one from MPP (HO scale).  After a,lot of research I determined that two of the chimneys had metal pipes extending them with segments and on top of the pipe was a cone shaped cap that looks like a less pointed dunce cap.

I have looked at a lot of detail part manufacturers but I can't seam to find this detail in HO scale.  Anyone know who makes this part?

Welztalbahn: Emsingen station segment installed in layout

4 weeks after I started work on the station segment (see my MRH blog posts), it has now reached a level consistent with the neighboring segments, the maintenance facility and the town of Emsingen.

Hollow Core Door Noise

While hesitant to revisit this subject, I am unable to locate the "final findings" (if they were, in fact, that) regarding
hollow core door noise and the or any solution(s) to reduce the noise that appears to be inherent when using HCDs; foam; most roadbed choices and adhesives for same, etc.

Specifically, I wish to use Homasote for roadbed both directly on the HCD as well as on foam that is "glued" to the HCD.
