Walthers Cantilever Grade Crossing Signal

Had a good laugh with my local shop owner over my disappointment that there was only 1 crossing signal in the package for $44 cdn. Why only one? Who has seen a crossing with only one signal? Buyer beware/caveat emptor of this product. Maybe others have learned the hard way too?

Walters also has a Crossing Signal Controller/detection circuit.. for $55 ea. Anyone know of any other options?

Dealing with the cost and what to go with

Being the drastic cost now showing  in this hobby, and faced with finally a space to plan a layout, I'm a bit torn as to direction, and seeking some input.  I model HO scale and model today'so Era but as a freelance.

Car Storage as a Layout

How about rail car storage as a layout?

https://goo.gl/maps/hdctRV2JhWs

You've got tons of staging, yards, a wye, two loops to turn around (put those tropes to work!). You can also use an area of turnouts sitting in place that you haven't gotten around to setting up yet as a prototypical area of expansion.

They have several SD40s and south of the sand facility you can see the tracks being built to their now-finished maintenance facility and car repair shop.

How to Add Interiors to Model Buildings

Hi All, this week I'm looking at really simple interiors for your buildings.

making my own buildings have questions

ok so im building a layout design for my nephew and i to toy with so far so good but he asked me if i could build him a custom factory out of elmers foam board no biggie my questions are this

#1 how do i build in in ho scale is there a way to measure it so its in the correct scale

#2 has any one else ever made buildings outta foam board or card board?

#3 whats the best way to make it look like the windows have glass this will be an old factory not a modern one and it will be tall with a smoke stack

best way to light my layout

ok so i use life like power loc track and im kinda going for a turn of the century rail road layout design. I.E. there will be some steam locals and some diesel locos in a small country setting, and im wanting to put a few street lamps on the layout but im new to all this would prefer it if i could some how connect the lamps to my transformer via the accessories connector im on fixed income so the cheaper the better im also open to putting la,ps on the layout even if they dont light as i dont really run my trains in the dark

Back to HO after 20+ Years

Well I have successfully ebay'd completely all of my N-scale related stuff.  All rolling stock, loco's, scenery, structures and structure flat scenes.  So after deleting a sizeable layout I decided that a small (8 x 10) along the wall HO switching layout would be in order.

Homemade conventional control throttle Or a homemade DCS system or TMC

Is there anybody on the forum have built a hand held throttle for conventional control AC trains other than   Lionel,MTH or  The one published in classically  toy train  last year?

The Opoma Sawmill and Machinery

Some months ago I posted some pictures of my sawmill machinery fresh from Shapeways. Since then it has been installed into the Opoma Sawmill on my Springwater Sub and I thought I'd show you how it's working out. The machinery is in, the overhead belt drive system is installed and the lights are on, after this a lot of sawdust and woodchips and some detail parts and I'll have myself a sawmill!

In praise of Proto87 spikes!

Sometimes it pays to revisit things we’ve tried in the past but didn’t particularly like at the time. And, sometimes it also pays to beat back perfectionism and take a compromising, albeit better, path.
