N&AC Track Plan

I can't believe I'm even considering this, but I am thinking of altering my track plan.  Well, I love track planning, so that's no surprise.  So, I thought I'd better start this thread so I can get opinions as I change my mind a million times over the next 15 years or so.  smiley

DCC by radio to N and H0 trains

A company in Denmark called GamesOnTrack has just announced a new decoder that allows DCC by radio and at 29x11x4 mm it will fit in HO and N locos.  It is part of their GT-Position system and will be demonstrated at the next Nuremburg Toy Fair in February.  Here is a quick overview of the entire system from my understanding as it relates to trains, cars and quad copters.

DOMTAR Pulp and Paper Mill

This thread documents the rebooted DOMTAR Pulp and Paper Mill layout.

I have decided to combine all of the separate layout blogs I have been posting into one by linking to the older ones below the track plan. I will post all further progress updates in this single blog.

The most recent version of the track plan will be posted at the top of the thread.

Keller Shipyard aka Shipyard at Foss | Sierra West Scale Models

Now for some of my modeling.

I bought this kit a few months after a very close family member passed away. I knew that, someday this event was going to effect me a great deal. For years it sat on a shelf, waiting for its day to be built.

Late 2016 Update

Well it has been a very long time since the last post and life has been equally busy. Despite the craziness, still found time to get to the basement out of the summer heat and subsequent winter cold, and get some things accomplished on the railroad. Starting this project, I really didn't have a general idea of how fast things would move and how far we would be in roughly a year, but we have reached that point and I am actually quite surprised.

Changing Personal Account Avatar

I wanted to change the avatar photo for my personal account and have had no success in doing so. In account edit I check the box to delete current photo and save. Poof.  Photo is gone. Check a recent reply to a posting and no associated photo is shown there either. Go back to account, upload "new" photo - save - and the original photo pops up as if it is the default and it's either this or nothing at all. The new photo choice falls within the size guidelines for avatars of 85 x 85 x 100kB.

Steam locomotive equipment question

I thought I knew what most of the equipment that hangs off a steam locomotive was, but this has me confused:

Anyone know what these devices are?

Thanks in anticipation

The things you can make out of the strangest things

I was unpacking my model railway stuff and came across this little tank I made years ago. I'm surprised it survived and wasn't crushed.

It is made from a Life Savers candy wrapper with old spare parts glued to the ends of it - tank ends that just happen to fit the wrapper perfectly, which brings to mind that most of my nicest models and scenery was made from inexpensive materials. I'm going to use it on my module near the coal dump track.

Pine shelving as staging yard roadbed - fix or redo?

I started building the railroad in my basement around 20 years ago. (It has been dormant for most of that time until recently.) After building my around-the-walls-with-a-big-peninsula L-girder benchwork, the first thing I did was to build the first of two hidden staging yards. Being young[er] and without patience, I went out and bought some 1x12 pine shelving to serve as the foundation for the track. The tracks, 10 in all, are spiked directly to that pine base. Cringing yet?

N Scale A&C Update

Well, it's been over a year since my last update.  In that time we've had a rapidly growing toddler that has taken up 99% of our time and we also managed to finish the rest of the basement so that we had space to enjoy as a family that was next to the train room.  While we finished the basement, the trainroom became a storage room and needless to say, there had been no work done in there.
