Herd of Cows?

This blog entry contains the most appalling pun ever - but here goes:

Of course I have heard of cows -the old ones are always the best!

Two packs of HO cows arrived the other day along with some fencing from York Modelmaking.

A Question About On30

I want to thank everyone for all the input on modeling with HOn30. We have been considering On30 also because it seems like a little more equipment is available. I was looking on the Bachmann site at their nice engines but I noticed all were DCC. Under features it said DCC-equipped for speed, direction and lighting. I do not have DCC so can you run them on DC and what kind of power pack would I need?  If they can be used with DC will they run at scale speeds?  I was hoping to use HO scale track if we decide to do On30.

Signalling on the N&AC

My general Blog on the N&AC has some preliminary information on my signal system.  I am using C/MRI with two S-MINI nodes, DCCODs, and Oregon Rails signals.  I am driving all of that with JMRI Panel Pro.  I am also using Digitrax DCC, but the signal system is separate and would work with any train control setup.

Alexander Scale Models turnout throws

Yes I know these are old and quite ugly, but they work!  Hard to find so I was thinking about fabricating my own.  I know I read an article back in MR some time back on how to do this but have been unsuccessful in researching it on the web.  I don't believe it would be all that difficult using brass tubing and such but I little advice from anybody is welcome.

Anyways, here is a close up of these ground throws.

What I learned this month - December, 2016 - Calipers for Modeling

I've purchased several calipers over the years, with the most recent (and highest end) set arriving this week.  That got me to thinking about their relative strengths for my uses and decided to share some thoughts with this community.

In the photo below are the four calipers I currently own - all have a 6 inch / 150mm range. From left to right, are:

Unique vintage siding

While searching the net for details that I can use while sceniking my industrial areas I came across this photo, which I thought might interest modelers of the 30s and 40s.

Toggle Switch/Push Buttons for NCE Button Board

Looking at using the NCE Switch 8 Mk2 and the button board. What kind of toggle switch have you found to work best and/or what kind of push button have you used?

Repairing a Walthers-Shinohara Double Slip

My yard has four #6 double slips -- all bought at the same time through my LHS. When I was first laying track it was noticed that one of the switch rails had come loose from the metal sub-throwbar it was soldered to. Resoldered... end of story, I thought.

Then when chasing a persistant but intermittent short in the yard, I noticed that one of the switch-rails had come loose:
